Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Crookston men's basketball team came away with a 63-60 win over Valley City State University in the first round of the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium in Superior, Wis. The Golden Eagles moved to 2-1 with the victory, while Valley City State fell to 4-1.

The Golden Eagles were led by a strong performance from Derrick Redd, Jr. (Sr., G, Menifee, Calif.), who finished with 25 points including four three-pointers. C.J. Polk (So., G, Milwaukee, Wis.) added 19 points including 10 points from the charity stripe. Ben Grygiel (Jr., F, Rockford, Ill.) added five points, while Nate Lorenz (Fr., F/C, Breckenridge, Minn.) chipped in six. UMC was 21-of-52 for 40.4 percent, while they were 7-of-16 for 43.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Redd is off to a strong start to his senior season. In his three games thus far, Redd is averaging 16.7 points per game in his three games thus far.

Jayden Ferguson led Valley City State with 19 points and seven rebounds. L.J. Booth finish with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Darryl Howell came off the bench for 11 points and two boards. The Vikings were 25-of-70 for 35.7 percent from the field. In addition, they were 4-of-18 for 22.2 percent from beyond the arc.

The Golden Eagles will play the winner of University of Wisconsin-River Falls and the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
