Box Score Crookston, Minn.- The UMC soccer team wrapped up their 2015 season with a 2-1 home loss to St. Cloud State, Sunday afternoon. The conference loss sets the Golden Eagle's NSIC record at 7-8, 7-10-1 overall. The seven conference wins is a program best, as is the 21 points earned in the NSIC standings, but they fell one point short of the eighth and final spot in the 2015 NSIC championship tournament.
The Huskies struck first when Alyson Fisher (Jr., Kimberly, Wis.) scored from about 10 yards out as she went high far corner, over Golden Eagle keeper,
Lexie Gauger (Jr., Green Bay, Wis./Criminal Justice) who made seven total saves on the day.
St. Cloud State extended their lead to 2-0 in the 61
st minute of play when Fisher scored again, off a scramble in front of the UMC net. The Golden Eagles got within a goal ten minutes later as junior defender,
Samantha Deutsch (Lakeville, Minn./Accounting and Finance) sent a corner kick into the box that
Delaney McIntyre (Flin Flon, Manitoba/Sport and Recreation Management) headed into the back of the net from up close. The goal is the senior's fifth of the season.
Forwards,
Lorna McCall (Chicago, Ill.) and
Courtney Armborst (West St. Paul, Minn./Biology) both had solid chances to score in the game's final minutes with Armborst having a close up shot with two minutes remaining, but the shot went wide left.
With the final record of 7-10-1, 2015 marks the fourth straight year improvement for the UMC program, all under the leadership of head coach
Joe Alianiello. "It's a tough result today," said Alianiello. "I think we played a little tentative knowing what was at stake. We showed the same fight we have all year to tie things up, but we just couldn't get the second goal."
"I think we'll look back at this season as a success when it's all said and done," added Coach Alianiello. "We lost a lot of players from last year, and this team responded very well; especially in the second half of the season. I'm proud of this group."
