Golden Eagles Take First Set Against No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul Since 2002 But Fall 3-1 to Golden Bears

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston fell 3-1 (25-11, 23-25, 25-18, 25-12) to No. 3 Concordia University, St. Paul Sat., Oct. 31 at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles played well in the second set, forcing 13 attack errors for the Golden Bears, a rarity for a team notorious for playing well in system. The Golden Eagles would win 25-23 in set two, giving them their first set win over Concordia-St. Paul since 2002.

UMC however would fall in the match and drop to 7-17 (3-13 NSIC) as they have lost nine straight dating back to an Oct. 3 win over Minnesota State University Moorhead.

UMC was led by Kassi Green (R-So., OH, Anoka, Minn.), who had seven kills and hit .227. Kali Erickson (Jr., OH, Fargo, N.D.) had eight kills on the night, while Maggie Perrel (R-So., RS, New Germany, Minn.) had nine kills but also had 11 errors.

UMC continued to utilize the 6-2 rotation, utilizing two setters. Sierra Trost (Jr., S, Ham Lake, Minn.) led the way with 20 assists. Kaycie Hagen (So., S/DS, Savage, Minn.) would finish with 13 assists. UMC hit .057 for the match with 36 kills and 27 errors.

Defensively, Casey Cashman (Jr., DS/Lib., Ashland, Wis.) had a solid match with 21 digs, while Stephanie Pearson (Sr., OH, Frankfort, Ill.) had 13 digs and Perrel added 12.

Concordia-St. Paul looked to their middle hitters on the evening. Riley Hanson finished with 17 kills nad just one error and hit .667 for the night. Emma Lange added 17 kills and hit .452. UMC was able to exploit their outside hitters a bit. Anna Schlaak would have 10 kills but also had seven errors, while Emily McDonough had four kills and four errors.

At setter, Kasey Williams finished with 55 assists, while hitting .241 with 63 kills and 24 errors.

Defensively, Taylor Dordan led the way with 21 digs, while Hope Schiller and McDonough each had 18 and Schlaak had 16. On the block, Hanson and Heather Schiller each had three block assists.

The Golden Bears would get out to a 7-1 lead early on in the first set and would not look back as they won 25-11.

In set two, Concordia-St. Paul would take a late 23-22 lead, but a kill from Erickson, an attack error from Schlaak and a bad set from Williams would help deliver UMC's set two victory.

In set three, UMC would hold their own but would fall 25-18, while Concordia-St. Paul would dominate 25-12.

The Golden Eagles will hit the road for the last time in NSIC play as they take on Minnesota State University Moorhead Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. and Northern State University Nov. 7 at 4 p.m.
