Box Score Duluth, Minn.- The Golden Eagle soccer team played their final road game of the 2015 season, Friday night, where they knocked off the University of Minnesota Duluth, 2-1, in a crucial NSIC match. The win is the first ever over the Bulldogs and UMC needed the win to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The Bulldog's Katie Peterson (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) opened up the scoring in the 14
th minute of play as she converted on a goal that was assisted by Marissa Ganske (Jr., Eagan, Minn.). The Peterson marker was the only ball to get past Golden Eagle goalkeeper,
Lexie Gauger (Jr., Green Bay, Wis./Criminal Justice) who made five saves through regulation and an additional five saves in the two overtime periods, two of which were difficult stops.
Frosh forward,
Lorna McCall (Chicago, Ill.) evened things up at 1-1 early in the second half as she cut in and hit a strike over the Bulldog keeper from 20 yards out. The goal is her second of the season and it came at the 47:20 mark.
Neither team scored in the first overtime but in the 115
th minute of play Gauger punted a ball deep that was picked up by
Courtney Armborst (West St. Paul, Minn./Biology) who was set in on net on a breakaway. The senior forward scored her seventh goal of the season, giving UMC the 2-1 overtime win, and three points in the conference standings.
The win ups the Golden Eagle's overall record to 7-9-1, 7-7 in NSIC play and gives them 21 points in the NSIC standings, going into their final game of the regular season where they will host St. Cloud State University (8-5-3, 7-4-3). UMC currently sits in 9
th place, only one point behind Bemidji State University, Concordia University – St. Paul and Southwest Minnesota State University. With the top eight teams making the 2015 NSIC tournament, the season will come down to one game.
