Crookston, Minn.- The Golden Eagle soccer team currently sits one game out of a playoff spot and with a road trip to Upper Iowa University and Winona State University the team will play against two programs that they are trying to catch in the conference standings.
With a current NSIC record of 5-6, UMC has 15 points and stands tied for ninth with Concordia University – St. Paul. In Saturday's match, the Golden Eagles will take on Upper Iowa who has 19 points and sits in seventh place in the NSIC standings. The Peacocks will be led by Madie Edwards (Sr., Crystal Lake, Ill.) who has 14 total goals, which is tied for top spot in the conference. If the UMC defense can keep Edwards off the board, the rest of the UIU squad has only scored eight total goals.
Ellie Brettschneider (So., Lakeville, Minn.) and
Samantha Deutsch (Jr., Lakeville, Minn./Accounting and Finance) will be two defenders that will be charged with shutting down the Peacocks big scorer.
Sunday's match with Winona State features a tandem of defensive standouts as last week's NSIC Defender and Goalkeeper of the Week will be dressed for the Warriors. Kati Baker (Sr., Appleton, Wis.) eared the defender honor while Rachel Oleson (So., Brookfield, Wis.) earned the keeper nod. As a team WSU has only allowed ten goals in 2015.
Last weekend, UMC was led by a pair of seniors as
Courtney Armborst (West St. Paul, Minn./Biology) and
Delaney McIntyre (Flin Flon, Manitoba/Sport and Recreation Management) both scored in each of the conference wins. Each also had scores late in the games as Armborst scored in the final five minutes of Saturdays 3-2 win over Minnesota State University Moorhead, while McIntyre's winner came with two seconds left in overtime when the Golden Eagles knocked off Northern State University, 2-1.
With an overall record of 5-8-1, 5-6 in the NSIC, UMC needs to add some points to their total of 15. If they can also add to their current two game win streak, they can pick up a couple spots in the NSIC standings and get closer to the 2015 NSIC championship tournament.
