CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball program will take on University of Minnesota Duluth to wrap up the 2014 season. The Golden Eagles will face the Bulldogs at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Sat., May 3rd and at 12 and 2 p.m. Sun., May 4th. Saturday will serve as Senior Day for Minnesota Crookston as they honor eight seniors who will be playing their final games in a Golden Eagle uniform.
The senior group includes four-year seniors
Josh Brehmer (Sr., 2B/SS, Falcon Heights, Minn./Communications),
Matt Korte (Sr., 3B/P, St. Cloud, Minn./Accounting) and
Ryan Paasch (Sr., P, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sports and Rec Management). In addition, the Golden Eagles will honor seniors
Jeremiah Friday (C/1B, Rush City, Minn./Natural Resources),
Thane Larson (P, Grantsburg, Wis./Natural Resources),
Tony Madsen (SS/2B, Mounds View, Minn./Natural Resoucres),
Jon Mittag (P, Glenville, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) and
Richie Navratil (P, Blansko, Czech Republic/Sports and Rec Management).
Several Golden Eagles have already set records at UMC with Brehmer as career leader at UMC for hits, games played, games started, at bats, walks and total bases. Paasch has set the mark for appearances and games finished. He is second all-time in innings pitched. Korte is tied for first for most wins and is third for most at bats, games started and games played.
The Golden Eagles come into the final series with a 1-43 (0-32 NSIC) mark as they seek their first conference victory after the season after having four one-run losses in the last week-and-a-half, including losing on a walk-off home run to Minot State University Thursday. Minnesota Crookston continues to be led by
Ryan Haggstrom (So., C/1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting), who is hitting .358 with 23 runs scored and 18 RBI's. Haggstrom is currently just six hits shy of tying the single-season hits mark at UMC.
In addition, the Golden Eagles are hopeful that two of their seniors who were hurt in the last week might make appearances in the final weekend in Brehmer and Madsen. Brehmer went down with a concussion Thursday but has a possibility of playing Sunday. Madsen also has a possibility of playing after going down with a shoulder injury last weekend.
On the mound, the Golden Eagles have been led by senior Navratil, who is 0-9 with a 8.31 earned runs average. Navratil has looked dominant at points this season.
Minnesota Duluth has not played a home game in two seasons and will have their seniors honored in Crookston Sunday. UMD is 14-23 (10-17 NSIC). The Golden Eagles were swept by Northern State University last weekend and did not play any mid-week games. UMD has been led at the plate by Cody Aasen, who is hitting .331 with 12 runs scored and 21 RBI's. In addition to Aasen, Alex Wojciechowski comes in batting .318 with 27 runs scored and 33 RBI's.
On the mound, Bo Hellquist leads the way with a 3-4 mark and a 3.27 ERA in 44 innings pitched.
