Box Score 2 REDFIELD, S.D. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell to Northern State University 8-3 and 14-3 in a doubleheader Mon., April 7 at American Legion Centennial Park in Redfield, S.D. Big innings for Northern State in both games helped to catapult the Wolves past the Golden Eagles.
UMC drops to 1-23 (0-12 NSIC) with Monday's losses. The Wolves improves to 14-10 (8-6 NSIC) with a pair of wins.
The start for game one Monday for Minnesota Crookston went to
Trevor Buttermore (So., P, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice). Buttermore would go six innings, giving up seven earned runs on nine hits in the loss.
The win for Northern State went to Cody Vandever, who went five innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits as he earned the victory.
Buttermore would pitch strong early on but would be called for two balks in the bottom of the first. The first run of the game would cross as Matt Stubs scored on one of the balks. Riley Shintaffer would then steal home on a double steal as
Ryan Haggstrom (So., C/1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting) attempted to throw out the runner advancing to second.
Three more runs would cross off Buttermore in the second led by Stubbs, who has been on fire of late. Stubbs singled to left field to drive in two, scoring Tyler Gripentrog and Buddy Traxler, helping to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Golden Eagles would be poised for a big inning in the top of the third. With no outs, the Golden Eagles would have two men on when haggstrom singled to left field to score
Patrick Higgins (So., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice). With men at second and third, Northern State would walk
Travis Magdzas (Jr., OF, Duluth, Minn./Criminal Justice) to load up the bases and would subsequently walk Robbie Smothers (Jr., 3B, Wacnia, Minn.) to score
Matt Korte (Sr., 3B/P, St. Cloud, Minn./Accounting).
With the bases still juiced a controversial play on a fly ball just outside of the infield would result in an infield fly ruling on a
Marcus Campbell (So., OF/P, St. Croix Falls, Wis./Golf and Turf Management) that actually dropped in. The umpire had signaled an infield fly late, after the runner from second had already started to try to advance to third. The runner would be thrown out at third and Campbell would be ruled out but Haggstrom would score. The Golden Eagles would still be able to get three runs out of the inning.
The momentum seemed to swing right back to Northern State after UMC had it momentarily during the third. The Wolves would add three more runs in the third and fourth innings to extend their lead to 8-3. Buttermore would shut down Northern State the rest of the way.
The Golden Eagles would be led by Korte, who was 2-for-4 with one run scored and Haggstrom was 1-for-3 with run scored and one RBI.
Northern State would be led by Stubbs, who was 3-for-4 with four RBI's and two runs scored, while Alex Cornwell was 2-for-3 with one run scored.
In game two,
Thane Larson (Sr., P, Grantsburg, Wis./Natural Resources) would get the start and would start out strong, giving up just two earned runs on five hits.
However, Larson would get hit in the fourth, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits. He would finish the game going four innings and giving up 10 earned runs on 13 hits.
Northern State would hit four home runs in the game in the very cozy confines of Centennial Park, which measures just 320 down the lines and 36o to dead center. The Wolves would string together three home runs in the fourth inning alone as Derek Tymesen hit a solo shot, Buddy Traxler hit a two-run dinger and Cornwell hit a two-run home run, as well.
The Golden Eagles would plate three runs in the game beginning with two runs in the sixth as Korte tripled to drive in Haggstrom and Campbell singled to drive in Korte.
Minnesota Crookston would add one run in the sixth as
Jesse Jennings (Jr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice) crossed the plate on a groundout.
The Golden Eagles were led by Haggstrom, who was 3-for-4 with one run scored in game two.
Northern State was paced by Stubbs, who was 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored and Nutting, who was 2-or-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored.
John Eckstein picked up the win for Northern State after pitching five innings of shutout ball, giving up just three hits.
