Northern State Uses Big Innings in 9-2 and 9-3 Wins Over Minnesota Crookston Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 REDFIELD, S.D. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 9-2 and 9-3 to Northern State University Sun., April 6 at American Legion Centennial Ballpark in Redfield, S.D. The Golden Eagles had a 2-1 lead over the Wolves going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but a six-run bottom of the seventh would lead the Wolves over the Golden Eagles in game two.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 1-21 (0-10 NSIC) after the pair of losses. Northern State improves to 12-10 (6-6 NSIC) after picking up the two wins.

Matt Korte (Sr., P/3B, St. Cloud, Minn.) got the game one start for UMC and would go five innings Sunday. Korte would allow just four runs in the first four innings but Northern State would come up with a big fifth inning with five runs as Korte would end up suffering the loss in game one. Korte would finish the game allowing nine earned runs on nine hits.

The win for Northern State in game one would be earned by Northern State's Colton Boucher, who went the full seven innings in a solid outing on the mound. Boucher would allow two earned runs on eight hits with foru strikeouts.

The Wolves started the scoring in the bottom of the second as Robbie Rocamora hit a two-run home run to drive in Trevor Sporrer to make it 2-0.

The Golden Eagles would cut the advantage to 2-1 as Patrick Higgins (Fr., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) singled to drive in Jesse Jennings (Jr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice)

Northern State would add two more runs in the fourth.

The Wolves would really get to Korte in the bottom of the fifth as he gave up five earned runs on five hits. Northern State's onslaught in the fifth was aided by a grand slam with no outs by Matt Stubbs.

The Golden Eagles would cut the lead to 9-2 in the top of the seventh as Marcus Campbell (So., OF/P, St. Croix Falls, Wis./Golf and Turf Management) hit the first home run of his collegiate career. That would be the last run UMC could muster as Northern State took game one 9-2.

UMC had eight different guys come up with hits in the game, led by Campbell, who was 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI and Jennings, who was 1-for-3 with one run scored.

Northern State was paced in game one by Stubbs, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI'sm, and Rocamora, who was 1-for-2 with one run scored and three RBI.

In game two, Richie Navratil (Sr., P, Blansko, Czech Republic/Sports and Rec Management) got the ball and would pitch a great first six innings. Navratil would allow just two earned runs on three hits through the first six but a big seventh inning would lead Northern State past UMC. Navratil allowed four earned runs on three hits in the seventh before being pulled.

The Golden Eagles would come out of the gate strong as they strung together five straight singles with one out led by a Robbie Smothers (Jr., 3B, Waconia, Minn.) single to left field to drive in Ryan Haggstrom (So., C/1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting) and Higgins as UMC took the early 2-0 advantage.

Northern State would add a run in the bottom of the third as Danny Fischer hit a leadoff solo shot to cut it to 2-1.

The Wolves would tie things up in the bottom of the fourth as Derek Tymeson reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Alex Corwell, who reached on an error by UMC second baseman Josh Brehmer (Sr., 2B/SS, Falcon Heights, Minn./Communications).

Northern State would add a run in the bottom of the sixth as Sporrer singled to drive in Cornwell.

The Wolves' big seventh inning was led by a double to left center by Sporrer to drive in Riley Shintaffer and Stubbs.

UMC would add a run in the ninth as Haggstrom singled to drive in Higgins to cut the Northern State lead to 9-3.

Cody Pamperin (Fr., P, Shakopee, Minn./Golf and Turf Management) would come on in relief and give up two earned run on one hit in 1.1 innings pitched.

The win for Northern State went to J Georgakas, making his first appearance in relief this season for the Wolves. James Georgakas went four innings, giving up just oen earned run on four hits.

Cody Johns started for Northern State and went five innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits.

Minnesota Crookston was led by Higgins, who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. In addition, Magdzas was 3-for-4 for the day, while Smothers was 2-for-5 with two RBI's.

Northern State was led by Stubbs, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI's. In addition,
Rocamora went 1-for-2 with three RBI's and one run scored.

The Golden Eagles and Wolves will play a second doubleheader Mon., April 7 at 12 and 2 p.m. in Redfield, S.D.
