Box Score 2 SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 7-0 and 14-5 to Augustana College (S.D.) Sun., March 30 at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Golden Eagles fall to 1-19 (0-8 NSIC). Augustana improves to 17-7 (7-1 NSIC) with Sunday's victories.
The start in game one went to
Trevor Buttermore (So., P, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice). Buttermore went 4.2 innings in the loss. He allowed seven earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
The win for Augustana went to Tyson Gau, who pitched a seven-inning shutout, allowing just three hits in the win.
Augustana opened up the game with four early runs off of Buttermore. Kye Winter started out the scoring when he singled up the middle to plate Alex Fink and Tony Viger. Jack Goihl would score on a passed ball to make it 3-0. A double from Jake Petersen would drive in Winter to extend the Viking lead to 4-0.
The Vikings would add three more runs in the second off Buttermore. Jacob James would tally the first run as he stole home on a double steal. A single from Goihl would then drive in Fink and Viger to extend the advantage to 7-0.
The UMC pitching stepped up in the next four innings as Buttermore and
Cayden Barta (Fr., P, Fargo, N.D./Criminal Justice) would shut down the Vikings. Buttermore would just give up one hit in his remaining 2.2 innings pitched while Barta pitched 1.1 innings of shutout baseball with no hits allowed.
UMC was paced by
Matt Korte (Sr., 3B/P, St. Cloud, Minn./Accounting), who was 2-for-2 and
Travis Magdzas (Jr., OF, Duluth, Minn./Criminal Justice), who was 1-of-2.
Augustana was led by Goihl, who was 2-for-2 with two RBI's and one run scored. Winter was 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI's.
Korte got the start in the 14-5 loss in game two for UMC. Korte went four innings and suffered the loss to fall to 0-4 after giving up seven earned runs on nine hits.
The win for Augustana went to Michael Letkewicz, who went five innings and allowed just two earned runs on five hits.
Augustana started out the scoring three innings in the bottom of the first. Fink started out the scoring as he drove in Viger and Petersen with a double to left center. Goihl would then reach on an error, allowing Fink to cross the plate to make it 3-0.
Augustana would add one run in the second and third innings and would again get to Korte in the fourth with three runs led by doubles from Viger and Goihl.
UMC was led by a three-run sixth inning in which
Ryan Haggstrom (So., C/1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting) opened up scoring scoring on error by the third baseman. Korte and Magdzas would then score on a throwing error by the short stop.
The Golden Eagles were led in the game by
Patrick Higgins (Fr., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice), who was 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Haggstrom was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI for Minnesota Crookston.
Augustana was paced by Marcus O'Neill, who was 3-of-5 with three runs scored and one RBI while Viger was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI's. Fink was an unblemished 4-of-4 with three runs scored and foru RBI's.
Minnesota Crookston was scheduled to play University of North Dakota April 2, but that game will be postponed to a later date.
