20-4 Run By Minot State To End First Half Propels Beavers Past Golden Eagles 87-64

Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn. - A 20-4 run in the final six minutes of the first half catapulted Minot State University to an 87-64 win over University of Minnesota Crookston. The Golden Eagles out-scored Minot State 60-57  during the other 36 minutes of Saturday night's game.

Minnesota Crookston drops their 16th-straight with the loss to the Beavers. UMC is now 4-18 (1-17 NSIC). The Golden Eagles' last win came Dec. 8 over University of Minnesota Duluth. Minot State improves to 8-4 (4-14 NSIC) with Saturday's victory, as the Beavers sweep the season series against Minnesota Crookston.

The Golden Eagles had probably the most scoring balance they have had all season with five players finishing the night in double figures. Derrick Redd, Jr. (So., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) led the way with 12 points on just 4-of-12 shooting. Tyler West, Jr. (Jr., F, Portland, Ore./Communications) and Brandon Burns (Sr., F, Baton Rouge, La./Sports and Rec Management) each added 11 points on the game. Tim Lubke (Jr., G, St. Paul, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) and Giorgi Koguashvili (Jr., G, Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia/Ag Business) each came off the bench for 10. Koguashvili scored in double figures in both games this weekend as he continued his hot scoring, as of late.

Kevin Larson (Jr., G, New Ulm, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) had four assists for UMC while John Hughes (So., F, Tualatin, Ore./Management) had eight points and six boards.

The Golden Eagles were 23-of-55 for 41.8 percent and 8-of-22 for 36.4 percent. In addition, they shot 10-of-12 from the foul line.

Minot State out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 32-25 on the game. The Beavers looked to crafty guards E.J. Williams and Dominique McDonald for their scoring. Williams had 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting with four three-pointers, while McDonald added 21 on 5-of-10 shooting, also with four three-pointers. Minot State would connect on 13-of-21 three-point attempts for an amazing 61.9 percent on the night.

Chris East, Thomas Korf and Samuel Johnson also scored in double figures for Minot State. The Beavers were 28-of-49 for 57.1 percent from the field and 18-of-23 from the charity stripe.

After holding their own for the first 14 minutes of the game and down just 31-29 to the Beavers, Minot State would take control and go on a 20-4 run on the Golden Eagles. After fie made free throws and a Williams lay-up, the run was really catapulted by threes from Korf and McDonald and a thunderous alley-oop dunk from Johnson off a pass from McDonald. All of these plays happened in a little over a minute. The run was brought home by another Korf trey and a fastbreak dunk from Johnson. The run was at 20-2 at that point, but Burns hit a pair of shots from the charity stripe as Minot State went into the break ahead 51-33.

The Golden Eagles would hold their own in the second half, but could only get as close as 14 points from a made bucket from West. Minot State would hang on for an 87-64 win.

Minnesota Crookston will wrap up their home slate next weekend with games against Concordia University, St. Paul and Minnesota State University, Mankato. The games will serve as the final games at home for Burns and Ashton Harrell (Sr., G, Houston, Texas/Sports and Rec Management). Burns will play his final home game in the Maroon and Gold, while that final game in the UMC gear as already come for Harrell, who had his collegiate career end due to a knee injury suffered over break back in Texas. Both seniors will be honored on Saturday.
