CROOKSTON, Minn. - Offensive rebounds helped guide The University of Mary men's basketball team past University of Minnesota Crookston 67-62 Friday night at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn. The Marauders out-rebounded UMC 41-25 with 18 offensive boards to inch past the Golden Eagles despite a strong shooting night (48.9 percent) from Minnesota Crookston with a balanced overall scoring effort.
Minnesota Crookston drops to 4-17 (1-16 NSIC) as they drop their 15th-straight NSIC contest. U-Mary improves to 5-16 (3-13 NSIC).
The Golden Eagles were led on the night by 18 points and eight boards from
Tyler West, Jr. (Jr., F, Portland, Ore./Communications) who had one of his best games in a Golden Eagle uniform. West was 8-of-12 from the field for the game. In addition,
Giorgi Koguashvili (Jr., G, Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia/Ag Business) continued his solid play as of late with 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field and 6-of-7 shooting from the charity stripe.
Derrick Redd, Jr. (So., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) also continued his strong second half of the season with 12 points and five assists, while
John Hughes (So., F, Tualatin, Ore./Management) added nine points and four rebounds.
Minnesota Crookston shot 22-of-45 for 48.9 percent, including going 13-of-24 for 54.2 percent in the second half. The Golden Eagles were 7-of-18 for 38.9 percent from three-point range and 11-of-15 for 73.3 percent from the foul line.
The different was the glass, where they were dominated 41-25, with just four offensive rebounds compared to 18 for the Marauders.
U-Mary was led by the physical play inside of Marc Musungayi, who was an inside presence from the on-set of Friday's game. Musungayi had 22 points and eight rebounds with six offensive boards. Jalen Jaspers added 20 points on 9-of-12 from the field, while Germain Decoste had eight points and 12 boards.
The Marauders were 28-of-61 for 45.9 percent from the field and just 3-of-15 for 20 percent from three. They also struggled at the charity stripe, going just 8-of-15 for 53.3 percent.
U-Mary would lead by just three (29-26) at the half. The Marauders would jump out to a quick 17-9 lead on the Golden Eagles led by the play of Musungayi, who had six of the first 17 points.
The Golden Eagles would slowly cut into the lead, making the deficit two following a West trey and a Redd jumper at the 10:04 mark.
However, U-Mary would go on a nother run to get back out to a 12-point advantage (29-17) following eight points from Musungayi. Minnesota Crookston would not go away though as they went on a 9-0 run to close out the first half to make it 29-26 at the break. The run was led by four points from Redd.
West led the Golden Eagles with 10 points at the break, while Redd had eight. UMC was 9-of-21 for 42.9 percent at the brea. Koguashvili added seven. The Marauders were paced by Musungayi's 12. They were 13-of-35 for 37.1 percent in the opening half.
U-Mary extend their lead to eight early on in the half as Jaspers got a lay-in with 14:44 remaining. The Golden Eagles would cut the lead to five (45-40) as Hughes made a lay-up at the 13:01 mark, but U-Mary would push it back out to 10 as Jaspers had a lay-in with 7:35 remaining.
The Golden Eagles would slowly close within five after a
Tim Lubke (Jr., G, St. Paul, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) three with 11 seconds left in the game, but that would be as close as they would get, falling 67-62.
Minnesota Crookston will remain at home to face Minot State University tomorrow at 6 p.m.
