Box Score DULUTH, Minn. - Minnesota Crookston went over five minutes without a basket in the second half as they fell 87-64 to the University of Minnesota Duluth Saturday at Romano Gymnasium in Duluth, Minn. The Golden Eagles controlled most of the first half and led 38-34 going into the locker room, but struggled to get anything going in the second half as they continued their second half woes from the night before against St. Cloud State University. UMD would out-score the Golden Eagles 53-26 in the second half.
Minnesota Crookston wraps up the 2013-14 regular-season with a 10-16 (7-15 NSIC) mark. Minnesota Duluth improves to 14-12 (11-11 NSIC).
The Golden Eagles were led Saturday by
Alexa Thielman (So., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science), who had 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including going 5-of-8 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Thielman ends the regular season with six games with five or more made three-pointers this season. Thielman had a huge first half with 17 points, but was held to six in the second half.
In addition to Thielman,
Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn./Early Childhood Education) added 12 points. Moenkedick tallied double-figures in 24-of-26 games this season.
Erika McRoberts (So., F, Byron, Minn./Health Science) added 12 points, while
Ebony Livingston (Jr., G/F, Minneapolis, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) added nine.
The Golden Eagles were 21-of-55 for 38.2 percent from the field Saturday. They hit 8-of-23 shots attempted from beyond the arc for 34.8 percent. Minnesota Crookston's struggles in the second half were epitomized by their shooting 9-of-31 for 29.0 percent. In addition, they were just 3-of-15 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Minnesota Duluth was paced by 25 points and 17 rebounds from Katrina Newman on 9-of-26 shooting from the field. Her sister, Jessica Newman added 15 points and five assists, while Taylor Meyer had 18 points and seven boards.
The Bulldogs shot 32-of-81 for 39.5 percent on the game and were 5-of-14 for 35.7 percent from behind the three-point line. They wiped the Golden Eagles on the glass out-rebounding UMC 55-34 on the game with 26 offensive rebounds. In addition, they forced 20 UMC turnovers.
Minnesota Crookston went into the break with a 38-34 advantage over the Bulldogs led by the red shot shooting of Thielman, who had just one miss on the half going 5-of-6 from the field, 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe to tally 17 points at the break for UMC. In addition to Thielman, Moenkedick chipped in eight points while Livingston added seven.
The Golden Eagles were very successful from the field on the half, connecting on 12-of-24 attempts for 50 percent, while they were 5-of-8 for 62.5 percent from beyond the arc and 9-of-10 for 90 percent from the free-throw line.
Minnesota Duluth looked to the Newman sisters in the first half, as Katrina Newman led the way with 12 points and eight rebounds on 5-of-14 shooting from the field. Jessica Newman added 11 points while Meyer had seven points and three rebounds. The Bulldogs were 13-of-40 for 32.5 percent on the half and were 3-of-8 for 37.5 percent from beyond the arc.
Where the Bulldogs did control the first half was on the glass, where the out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 27-15.
Minnesota Crookston would come out of the gate strong, getting out to an eight-point advantage ofn the Bulldogs as Thielman sank a three with 14:17 left in the first half. Minnesota Duluth would find their way back in, tying up the game 23-23 as Katrina Newman got an offensive board off her own shot and put back the miss.
The Golden Eagles would take control back later in the half as Moenkedick connected on a jumper to put the Golden Eagles up 38-32 with 2:37 remaining. Free throws from Meyer would cut it to 38-34 foing into the break.
UMD would come out on a mission in the second half, as the Golden Eagles continued their second-half woes from the previous night's game against St. Cloud State University. The Bulldogs would out-score the Golden Eagles 35-16 in the first 12 minutes of the half to get out to a 69-54 advantage with eight minutes remaining.
UMC would extend their lead to six points early on in the half, but a 10-2 run would give UMD the lead on Kenzie Kane free throws at the 14:09 mark. The two would go back-and-forth for the next couple of minutes until the Bulldogs took control with a 17-0 run as the Golden Eagles went over five minutes without a bucket from the 12:55 mark to the 7:35 mark.
Minnesota Crookston will continue their season at the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament, as will the other 15 teams in the conference. UMC will be the No. 7 seed in the NSIC North and will take on No. 2 seed in the NSIC South Minnesota State University, Mankato Wed., Feb. 26 at the Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn.
