Minnesota Crookston Falls 84-54 to Minnesota Duluth

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston men's basketball team fell 84-54 to University of Minnesota Duluth Sat., Feb. 22 at Romano Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles end the 2013-14 regular-season with a 4-22 (1-21 NSIC) mark. Minnesota Crookston ended the year on a 20-game losing streak after beating the Bulldogs early on in the NSIC season. The Golden Eagles had a big loss to their line-up shortly after the UMD win, losing leading scorer Ashton Harrell (Sr., G, Houston, Texas/Sports and Rec Management) to a season-ending injury.

The Bulldogs end the year with a 12-14 (10-12 NSIC) mark, ending the year with a weekend sweep over UMC and Bemidji State University.

The Golden Eagles were led by Derrick Redd, Jr. (So., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management), who tallied 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Redd tallied double figures in 10 of the last 15 games for Minnesota Crookston. In addition, Brandon Burns (Sr., F, Baton Rouge, La./Sports and Red Management) added seven points and four rebounds. The Golden Eagles shot 16-of-46 for 34.8 percent from the field. UMC is 3-of-14 for 21.4 percent from beyond the arc. At the charity stripe, UMC was 19-of-24 for 79.2 percent.

Minnesota Duluth controlled the boards on the day, out-rebounding the Golden Eagles 47-20. The Bulldogs had 16 offensive boards on the game. UMD finished the game, shooting 32-of-61 for 52.2 percent from the field and were 11-of-16 for 68.8 percent from three-point range. The Bulldogs were paced by 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting from Reece Zoelle. Jordan Reetz chipped in 16 points and four rebounds

Minnesota Duluth went into the locker room with a 35-22 advantage on the Golden Eagles. Minnesota Crookston was led by Burns, who added six points. Redd chipped in five points on the game. The Golden Eagles were 8-of-26 from the field for 30.8 percent and 1-of-8 for 12.5 percent from beyond the arc.

The Bulldogs shot 15-of-33 for 45.5 percent from the field and 4-of-6 for 66.7 percent from beyond the arc. Minnesota Duluth was  led by 12 points and five rebounds from Zoelle at the break, while Reetz added nine points and four boards. UMD dominated the Golden Eagles on the boards, out-rebounding UMC 26-11 with nine offensive boards in the first half.

UMC was withing two points early on in the game, making it 8-6 following a Burns lay-in at the 13:46 mark. The
Bulldogs were able to push out to a 17-point advantage at the 3:52 mark of the half following a Zoelle trey. The Golden Eagles would end the half down 35-22 to Minnesota Duluth.

The Bulldogs would open the half on a 8-1 run to grab a 43-23 lead at the 18:10 mark. Threes from Zoelle and Reetz would catapult UMD in the early going. UMD would extend their lead to 25 at 57-32 at the 13:42 mark following a Jake Wilson trey.

The Golden Eagles would go on a 9-2 run after being down 25 to cut the deficit to 18 (59-41) at the 9:46 mark led by four points from freshman Alec Koepp (F, Belle Plaine, Minn./Software Engineering). The Bulldogs would counter though to get back out to a 63-41 lead with 7:46 remaining in the game. Minnesota Duluth would not look back from there, taking the 84-54 win over Minnesota Crookston.

The Golden Eagles will face either Minnesota State University, Mankato or Winona State University in the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament. The two teams came into the night tied for the No. 1 seed in the NSIC South. Winona State lost their final game of the season, so if Minnesota State holds on to defeat Southwest Minnesota State University, they would be the No. 1 seed in the NSIC South. UMC is the No. 8 seed in the NSIC North.
