BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University was too much for the University of Minnesota Crookston men's basketball team, as the Golden Eagles fell 78-50 in their NSIC opener Sat., Nov. 29 at BSU Gymnasium in Bemidji, Minn. The game was the head coaching debut for
Dan Weisse in the NSIC. Weisse was an assistant at Minnesota State University Moorhead the past three seasons.
The Golden Eagles fall to 2-3 (0-1 NSIC). Bemidji State improves to 5-0 (1-0 NSIC) as they remain undefeated on the season.
Minnesota Crookston was led on the game by eight points and five rebounds from
Tyler West, Jr. (Sr., G/F, Portland, Ore./Communications).
Tim Lubke (Sr., G, St. Paul, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) added eight points, including going 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
Derrick Redd, Jr. (Jr., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) tallied six points and seven rebounds on the game. The Golden Eagles shot 20-of-60 from the field for 33.3 percent and were 3-of-18 for 16.7 percent from three.
Bemidji State was led by Brock Lutes, who had 15 points and four rebounds, while Irvin Womack came off the bench for 13 points and seven rebounds and D.J. Anderson had 10 points. The Beavers were 28-of-58 from the field for 48.3 percent. BSU was 9-of-21 from three for 42.9 percent.
Minnesota Crookston hung with Bemidji State out of the gate of the game, as they were down just 8-7 at the 16:44 mark but BSU would out-score the Golden Eagles 29-11 the rest of the half to go into the break with a 37-18 advantage over Minnesota Crookston.
The Golden Eagles were led by seven points on 2-of-6 shooting from
John Hughes (Jr., F, San Diego, Calif./Management). West added six points and three boards. Minnesota Crookston shot 6-of-30 for 20 percent on the game and connected on just 1-of-9 three-pointers for 11.1 percent.
Bemidji State had a balanced attack in the first half led by Womack off the bench, who was 3-of-3 from beyond the arc for nine points. Ben Best added seven points, while Lutes had six points.
The Beavers would get their advantage out to 22 at the 16:59 mark led by five points out of the gate by Lutes. Bemidji State would extend their lead to 58-28 at the 9:50 mark followed by a Pat Fischer three. The Beavers opened up the second half on a 21-10 run. UMC would hang on for a 78-50 win over the Golden Eagles.
UMC will open up their NSIC slate with game against University of Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State University.
