Upset-Minded Golden Eagles Fall Just Short in 64-63 Exhibition Thriller Against North Dakota State

Box Score FARGO, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston made some noise in the college basketball world Tuesday night, almost upsetting 2013-14 NCAA Division I Tournament Participant North Dakota State University at Scheels Arena in Fargo, N.D. The Golden Eagles would tie up the game with 24 seconds left as junior John Hughes (Jr., F, San Diego, Calif./Management) drained a three to complete a 10-0 run starting at the 3;11 mark. However, Hughes would send Kory Brown to the charity stripe where he would drain 1-of-2, which would be enough to send NDSU to the win.

The game was an exhibition contest for the Golden Eagles and does not count against their record. The game does count for NDSU, the improve to 3-2 with the victory. The game gave Head Coach Dan Weisse a chance to go against his former employer North Dakota State. Weisse was a Director of Basketball Operations for NDSU for four seasons.

The Golden Eagles had a balanced effort led by a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds from Tyler West, Jr. (Sr., G/F, Portland, Ore./Communications). Derrick Redd, Jr. (Jr., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) added 10 points, while Highes had 10 points and seven boards in his best game to-date.

The Golden Eagles were 18-of-47 for 38.3 percent for the game and shot an astonishing 11-of-21 for 52.4 percent from beyond the arc led by three treys from West.

North Dakota State was paced by A.J. Jacobson, who had 18 points and seven rebounds on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Brown added 13 points for the Bison on 6-=of-14 shooting.

NDSU shot 22-of-55 for 40 percent and was 4-of-12 for 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.

The Golden Eagles would find themselves down nine points (28-19) at the 6:46 mark of the first half, but would come charging back going on a 5-0 run led by an old-fashioned three-point play from Kevin Larson (Sr., G, New Ulm, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) and free throws from Sam Howell (Sr., G, Seattle, Wash./Sports and Rec Management) to cut the lead to 28-24.

UMC would keep on cutting into the lead and would tie the game up at 31-31 with 3:32 remaining in the first half on a Redd jumper. NDSU would go into the break with a 39-34 advantage.

NDSU would keep a comfortable distance for most of the second half, until the Golden Eagles went on their 10-0 run starting with a West three with 3:11 remaining. Two free throws from Redd would cut the NDSU lead to 63-58 with 1:38 remaining. After a stop on defense, Hughes would go to the line where he would cut the NDSU advantage to 63-60. After another stop, Hughes would drain the clutch three. However, his foul would prove costly as Brown drained the one free throw he needed to for the win.

The Golden Eagles will start NSIC play Saturday as they head to BSU Gymnasium to face Bemidji State University at 4 p.m.
