Explosive Second-Half Guides St. Cloud State to 45-24 Win Over Minnesota Crookston

CROOKSTON, Minn. – In a tale of two halves, the University of Minnesota Crookston football team led 24-17 over St. Cloud State University at the half, but the Huskies used 28 unanswered points in the second half to upend UMC 45-24 at Ed Widseth Field in Crookston, Minn. UMC moves to 0-5 on the season, while St. Cloud State improves to 2-3 on the year.

UMC was led by Ben Bucholz (Jr., QB, Perham/Ag Business), who was 19-of-28 with 192 yards passing with two touchdowns on the day.  His top target on the day was Marcus Cheatham (Sr., WR, Stockton, Calif./Sports and Rec Management), who had two grabs for 72 yards with a touchdown. With two receptions, Cheatham is now tied for fifth all-time for receptions in school history. In addition to Cheatham, Jordan Hester (Fr., WR, Arlington, Texas) added four receptions for 41 yards.

Saturday's game marked Bucholz first game against his former school St. Cloud State University. The UMC quarterback played basketball for St. Cloud State during the 2010-11 campaign before pursuing his football dream. On the flip side, former UMC basketball player Kyle Risinger, is a starting defensive back for St. Cloud State.

On defense, UMC was once again led by the outstanding play of Greg Lofquist (Sr., LB, South St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice), who had double-digit tackles once again with 16, and added one tackle for loss. Robert Gausi (Jr., DB, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Criminal Justice) added 13 tackles, while Tyler Hansen (Sr., DB, Morris, Minn./Wildlife Management) chipped in 10.

St. Cloud State was led by their running game which racked up 394 yards led by three players going for over 100 yards, which appears to be a first for the Huskies in a single game. Kenneth Walker led the way with 20 carries for 145 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Nate Meyer chipped in 11 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Ledell White had 22 carries for 129 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Huskies looked to Adam Josephson, who had eight tackles, while Mason Kramer chipped in five tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

UMC would control the early pace of the game as they would start things off with a Michael Maw (So., K, White Bear Lake, Minn./Accounting) 43-yard field goal. The field goal was a career-long for the Golden Eagle kicker. Later on the first quarter, Bucholz would hook up for Cheatham on a 66-yard strike to go ahead 10-0 over the Huskies.

St. Cloud State would get on the board late in the first quarter as Meyer completed a short pass to White, which he then rumbled and tumbled into the end zone for a 39-yard touchdown.

In the second quarter, the Huskies would add a 26-yard field goal from Eric Mielke to tie things up 10-10. St. Cloud State would then use a Meyer run, as he faked the hand off and went in 30 yards to pay dirt, to go up 17-10 on the Golden Eagles.

UMC would bounce back as Bucholz connected with Connette on a 10-yard touchdown pass to make it 17-17.

The Golden Eagles would put together a quick drive going into the half led by a great catch by Hester on the one-yard line to complete a 24-yard strike from Bucholz. The Golden Eagles would ram it into the end zone as Dre Person (So., RB, Detroit, Mich./Sports and Rec Management) took it in for the score from one-yard out.

Minnesota Crookston would hold the 24-17 advantage at the break. The tides would turn from there, as the St. Cloud State running game took over.

The Huskies would open the second-half scoring as Meyer hit Taylor Berger for a 19-yard touchdown pass to knot it up at 24-24. Later in the third quarter, Meyer would complete a drive with a one-yard touchdown run to make it 31-24.

St. Cloud State would add two more scores in the fourth quarter as White had a six-yard touchdown run and Walker had a 20-yard touchdown run to make the final score 45-24.

The Golden Eagles will head to Bemidji, Minn. next weekend for the "Hub Cap Game". UMC defeated the Beavers last season.
