BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Hub Cap is headed back to Bemidji, Minn., after Bemidji State University defeated the University of Minnesota Crookston 38-3 Saturday at Chet Anderson Stadium in Bemidji, Minn. The Golden Eagles struggled to get any offense going and gave up 504 yards of offense to the Beavers led by a BSU rushing attack that accounted for three touchdowns and 249 yards. The Golden Eagles fall to 0-6 on the season as BSU improves to 2-4. Minnesota Crookston falls to 2-20 all-time against Bemidji State after picking up the win last season in Crookston, Minn.
The Golden Eagles started out well as they scored first with a 23-yard field goal from
Michael Maw (So., K, White Bear Lake, Minn./Accounting) to put UMC up 3-0.
Bemidji State would make it 7-3 early in the second quarter after they finished off a 7 play, 73 yard drive with a Brady Schmidt five-yard touchdown run.
The Beavers would add nother score later in the second quarter as Ryan Shields completed the drive, finding Schmidt for an eight-yard touchdown strike to make it 14-3. The drive was led by two Shields passes, one of 29 yards to Juwaan Richard and 21-yard strike to Jordan Noskowiak.
Later on in the second quarter, BSU would drive the field but the Golden Eagles would come up with a stop in the red zone forcing a 26-yard Kyle Fodness field goal, which he made, extending the lead to 17-3.
Bemidji State added to their lead in the third quarter as Tahi Nomane ran in for a two-yard score to make it 24-3.
The Golden Eagles had two promising plays on the next drive as
Tyler Hansen (Sr., DB/P, Morris, Minn./Wildlife Management) ran a fake punt 18 yards on fourth down.
Talo Pascal (Jr., RB, Arlington, Texas/Communications) followed that up with a 27-yard rush to get UMC to the Bemidji Sate 26. However UMC would stall their and have to punt.
BSU would put the dagger to UMC on the next play as Shields found Blake Holder for a 69-yard touchdown strike to give the Beavers the 31-3 lead.
Nomane would have his second touchdown rush, this time from five yards out, in the fourth to make it 38-3 Bemidji State, which would be the final.
Ben Bucholz (Jr., QB, Perham, Minn./Ag Business) struggled on the day, going 12-of-32 for 134 yards.
Adam Connette (Fr., WR, Corona, Calif.) was the most productive individual with five catches for 78 yards.
BSU was led by Shields, who was 17-of-29 for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Jonathan Albercrombine led the running game with 13 carries for 85 yards while Nomane added 14 carries for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Holder was the leading receiver with three catches for 91 yards and a touchdown, while Richard added four grabs for 68 yards.
Defensively,
Greg Lofquist (Sr., LB, South St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice) notched his fourth-straight game with double-digit tackles with 13 tackles and one tackle for loss.
Drew Selvestra (Jr., DL, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) added 12 tackles and one tackle for loss, while
Benjamin Taliulu (Fr., DL, Aiea, Hawai'i/Criminal Justice) had nine tackles with two sacks.
BSU's defense was led by Colton Blascyk, who had seven tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss and Trysten Ross, who had seven tackles and one tackle for loss.
The Golden Eagles will return home for Homecoming as they take on University of Mary Sat., Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. UMC is 2-0 on Homecoming the last two seasons with wins over Bemidji State and Southwest Minnesota State University.
