Golden Eagles Fall 3-0 to Sioux Falls

CROOKSTON, Minn. –  The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team led in every set Friday evening but was unable to close out as they fell 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-22) to University of Sioux Falls at Lysaker Gymnasium. The night marked Parent's Night for UMC as they honored the parents of all of the players. UMC falls to 11-14 (5-12 NSIC) with Friday's loss. Sioux Falls improves to 15-12 (9-8 NSIC) with the victory. Sioux Falls also moves to 2-0 over UMC on the season. USF won 3-2 over the Golden Eagles in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Golden Eagles were led by 11 kills from Brittany Looker (Sr., OH, Rochester, Minn./Health Science). She hit .167 for the match. Kelci Green (R-Fr., MH, Anoka, Minn./Biology) had one of her best matches of the season with nine kills, a .500 hitting percentage and two solo blocks and one block assist. Her twin sister, Kassi Green (R-Fr., RS, Anoka, Minn./Elementary Education) added seven kills and hit .267 for the match.

At setter, Sierra Trost (So., Ham Lake, Minn./Health Science) led the way with 21 assists. Defensively, Trost also led the way with eight digs. UMC hit .216 on the match with 36 kills and 15 errors.

Sioux Falls was led by 17 kills from Emily Johnson, who as an outside hitter, put up a blistery .467 hitting percentage. Kate Hart added 10 kills and hit .263, while Jordan Calef added nine kills. USF hit .323 for the match with 45 kills and 15 errors. Kayla Crane led the team with 23 assists, while Sydney Schaap added 14.

Defensively, Abby Folk led the way with 10 digs, while Johnson added nine. On the block, Calef led the way with three block assists.

UMC got out to a 14-11 lead in set two, but USF would go on a 5-1 run to take a 16-15 lead over the Golden Eagles, led by two kills apiece from Johnson and Samantha Lovell. UMC would close to within 25-22 but a Michelle Ritland kill would deliver set one.

Set two would have a similar result as UMC got out to a 15-9 lead led by three kills from Looker. However, USF would go on an 11-2 run to get out to a 20-16 lead. Sioux Falls would again take the set 25-22.

In set three, Sioux Falls had the early lead but UMC would take over the lead 18-15 led by some USF errors. However, the Cougars would come back down the stretch led by three kills from Johnson to win the set 25-22.

The Golden Eagles will wrap up their home slate Sat., Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. as they host No. 8 Southwest Minnesota State University. UMC will honor seniors Looker, Morgan VanGerpen (Sr., MH/RS, Overland Park, Kan./Elementary Education) and Mary Mikutowski (Sr., Lib., Stillwater, Minn./Health Science). The UMC seniors have been a part of 49 wins during their four years at UMC.
