MINOT, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team fell 3-2 (24-26, 25-14, 25-13, 25-27, 15-13) to Minot State University at the MSU Dome in Minot, N.D. The Golden Eagles fall to 10-13 (4-11 NSIC) on the season, while Minot State improves to 8-16 (5-10 NSIC) with Saturday's win. UMC and Minot State went toe-to-toe for four sets with the Beavers coming away with the win after rattling off five straight points down the stretch in set five after UMC got out to a 13-10 advantage on Minot State.
The Golden Eagles were led by
Brittany Looker (Sr., OH, Rochester, Minn./Health Science), who had 13 kills with a .119 hitting percentage. In addition,
Kelci Green (R-Fr., MH, Anoka, Minn./Biology) had a strong game with a nine kills and a .583 hitting percentage. Her twin sister
Kassi Green (R-Fr., RS, Anoka, Minn./Elementary Education) added eight kills with a .318 hitting percentage.
Sierra Trost (So., S, Ham Lake, Minn./Health Science) had 18 assists, while
Kaycie Hagen (Fr., S, Savage, Minn./Health Science) also had 18 assists. The Golden Eagles hit .190 as a team.
Defensively,
Mary Mikutowski (Sr., Lib., Stillwater, Minn./Health Science) put together a strong match with 20 digs, while Looker, Trost and Hagen each added 10. UMC's block was led by the play of
Erin Schwarz (Fr., MH, Eden Prairie, Minn./Undecided) who had seven block assists on the night.
Minot State hit .316 for the match with 80 kills and 21 hitting errors. Jen Dixon led the way with 35 kills and hit a strong .365 for the match while Mallory Sall added 25 kills and hit .358 for the match. Tarah Dabovich had 19 kills and hit .486. At setter, Emily Byrne led the way with 70 assists for an average of 14 assists per set.
Defensively, Minot State looked to Cindy Pelo who had 24 assists.
UMC started out the match with a 26-24 set one victory. The two teams were knotted up at 24-24 down the stretch but kills from Looker and
Kelci Green gave UMC the win.
In set two, Minot State controlled play with a 25-14 victory. They continued their momentum by winning 25-13 in set three.
The Golden Eagles would bounce back to force a fifth set with a 27-25 set four win. UMC was down 25-24 but kills from Looker and
Morgan VanGerpen (Sr., MH, Overland Park, Kan./Early Childhood Education) and a service ace from Mikutowski would give UMC the win in the set.
In set five, UMC would get out to a 13-10 advantage but five-straight points from Minot State led by two kills from Sall during the final stretch would give Minot State the set win and the match victory.
The Golden Eagles will return to action in their "Dig Pink" match against Bemidji State University Tues., Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.
