Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn.- The Golden Eagle soccer team opened up their weekend with a 0-0 tie as they hosted Upper Iowa University in a NSIC match, on the Crookston campus. The UIU Peacocks entered the match in third place in the NSIC standings, while the Golden Eagle squad sat in ninth place, one spot out of the final NSIC playoff tournament.
UMC controlled the ball and the play through most of the opening frame where they outshot the Peacocks 3-1. Two of the Golden Eagle shots resulted in good scoring opportunities but their best shot came ten minutes into the second period when junior forward
Courtney Armborst (West St. Paul, Minn./Biology) hit a strike, point blank, that was stopped by the UIU keeper, Kaitlyn Emanuel. With the wind at their backs, Upper Iowa had the shot advantage in the second period, 9-1, but tough defense in the middle of the field by
Kallie Gau (So., Monticello, Minn./Early Childhood Education) helped preserve the regulation tie.
Each team got one shot off in the two overtime periods, but once again the UMC team stood strong on the defensive side, especially with plays on the wings by junior midfielder,
Delaney McIntyre (Flin Flon, Manitoba/Sport and Rec Management) who was all over the ball.
The 0-0 tie ups the UMC record to 6-5-4 overall, 5-4-3 in NSIC play, and moves them into a tie for the eighth and final playoff spot with the University of Minnesota Duluth who face off with the conference leaders Minnesota State University Mankato later tonight.
The Golden Eagles will return to the home pitch at noon on Sunday when they host Winona State University (13-1, 10-1) in Crookston.
