CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 27-25) to Winona State University Fri., Oct. 10 at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles put together a strong third set but would falter late as the Warriors took the 3-0 win. UMC falls to 8-9 (2-7 NSIC) with Friday's win. Winona State continues a strong start with a young team under first-year head coach Joe Getzin. The Warriors move to 12-3 (7-2 NSIC).
The Golden Eagles struggled to stay in the system for much of the match. UMC was led by recently crowned UMC all-time kills leader
Brittany Looker (Sr., OH, Rochester, Minn./Health Science), who tallied 12 kills and hit .194.
Kassi Green (R-Fr., RS, Anoka, Minn./Elementary Education) finished with seven kills while
Rachel Freund (Fr., OH, Jordan, Minn.) came off the bench and showed flashes of brilliance, finishing with six kills on the night.
At setter, the Golden Eagles continued with their 6-2 formation they had moved to last weekend.
Sierra Trost (So., S, Ham Lake, Minn./Health Science) led the team with 15 assists.
Kaycie Hagen (Fr., S, Savage, Minn.) added 14 digs.
Defensively,
Mary Mikutowski (Sr., Lib., Stillwater, Minn./Health Science) would step in at libero in the third set and would aid the Golden Eagles with seven digs. Both
Casey Cashman (Fr., Lib., Ashland, Wis./Natural Resources) and Freund had six digs apiece. The block was led by
Erin Schwarz (So., MH, Eden Prairie, Minn./Undecided), who had two solo blocks and four block assists.
Winona State was led by Danielle Rampart, who had 16 kills and hit .167. Taylor Goar added 15 kills and hit .520 for the match. At setter, McKenna Larsen paced the Warriors with 45 assists, as the team hit .297 for the match.
Defensively, libero Jamie Cairncross led the way with 20 digs.
The Golden Eagles struggled in the first two sets with just nine kills and a .176 hitting percentage in the first and eight kills and a .125 hitting percentage in the second. In the third, the Golden Eagles had a late advantage over the Warriors but Winona State would fight back to take the set and the match.
UMC will take on Upper Iowa University at 4 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn., as they look to get back in the win column.
