Thielman’s 21 Points Guide Golden Eagles to Crucial 71-58 Win Over Winona State

CROOKSTON, Minn.
- Alexa Thielman's (So., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science) 21 points, including four treys led the University of Minnesota Crookston to a 71-58 win over Winona State University as the Golden Eagles picked up a weekend sweep. The Golden Eagles improve to 6-6 (3-5 NSIC) after picking up the crucial NSIC win. Winona State falls to 8-4 (4-4 NSIC) after Saturday's loss.

The Golden Eagles shot 27-of-58 for 46.6 percent from the field and connected on 8-of-24 threes for 33.3 percent. In addition to Thielman, Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn./Early Childhood Education) added a near double-double with 12 points and nine boards. Ebony Livingston (Jr., G, Minneapolis, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) added 10 points, including six crucial points in the final four minutes of the game which helped seal the game for Minnesota Crookston.

The Golden Eagles had a balanced effort throughout the contest as several players stepped up in crucial moments of Saturday's contest against the Warriors. Christine Thorn (So., G, St. Michael, Minn./Early Childhood Education) played one of her best games in recent memory as she tallied nine points and five rebounds, including two treys on the night. Selina Barnes (Fr., G, Colorado Springs, Colo./Health Science) has also been an impact played off the bench with four points and three assists on the night. Megan Taylor (R-Fr., Estelline, S.D./Animal Science) added four points while Ashley Martell (Jr., G, Somerset, Wis./Health Science) added six.

Winona State finished the night shooting 23-of-57 for 40.4 percent, while they were 7-of-21 for 33.3 percent from three on the night. Winona State was led on the night by the play of point guard Tessa Wells, who was able to drive the lane most of the night and create for herself and her teammates. Wells finished with a near double-double of 19 points and nine assists. Connor Nagle added 11 points, including three treys. Kelsey Andrist and Abby Busch each added 10 points. Busch had six rebounds on the night, as well.

UMC narrowly out-rebounded the Warriors 35-33 on the night. The Golden Eagles were led by nine rebounds from Moenkedick while Kate Hartman came off the bench for eight.

Minnesota Crookston went into the break with a 32-29 lead over the Warriors. Winona State got out to a 20-12 lead in the first half over the Golden Eagles following six-straight points from Wells. The Golden Eagles would go on a 6-0 run later in the half and would tie the game at 24-24 following a Moenkedick jumper in the paint. The Golden Eagles would close the half on a 5-0 run following a Barnes jumper and a Thorn trey to go into the break with the 32-29 advantage. The Golden Eagles shot 14-of-32 for 43.75 percent from the field and connected on four treys for the game.

In the second half, the Golden Eagles went on a 10-2 run coming out of the gate on fire. Minnesota Crookston was led by threes from Martell and Thielman. UMC would lead 42-31 at the 16:50 mark of the second half.

Winona State would slowly cut the Minnesota Crookston advantage to one point (51-50) at the 7:08 mark following a Hartman made shot.

UMC would again counter though as Livingston, who had just four points early on in the game, stepped up and hit a jumper and converted three-point play from the charity stripe and then one free throw to extend the Golden Eagle lead to 66-55 with 2:21 remaining.

Minnesota Crookston moves into a tie for sixth place in the NSIC North with a pair of wins over Upper Iowa University and Winona State University to snap what was a five-game skid.

The Golden Eagles will hit the road next weekend as they take on Wayne State College Fri., Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. and Augustana College (S.D.) Sat., Jan. 11 at 4 p.m.
