Upper Iowa Uses 13 Threes to Defeat Minnesota Crookston 97-66

Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn. - The Upper Iowa University men's basketball team shot over 50 percent from the field and connected on 13 treys to spoil the University of Minnesota Crookston's home opener for the new year 97-66. The Golden Eagles have now lost their last five games dating back to a win Dec. 6 over University of Minnesota Duluth. Minnesota Crookston falls to 4-7 (1-6 NSIC) while Upper Iowa improves to 5-8 (3-4 NSIC) with Friday's win over the Golden Eagles.

UMC was led by 21 points from Brandon Burns (Sr., F, Baton Rouge, La./Sports and Rec Management). Burns was 10-of-18 from the field Friday night. Derrick Redd (So., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) came off the bench for 12 points for the Golden Eagles while Kevin Larson (Jr., G, New Ulm, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) was close to a triple-double on the night with nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

The Golden Eagles finished the night shooting 27-of-60 for 45.0 percent from the field. UMC struggled from three connecting on 3-of-18 shots from downtown. UMC had 18 turnovers on the game. The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded 41-35 by the Peacocks.

Upper Iowa dominated from beyond the arc on the night, connecting on 13-of-32 threes for 40.6 percent. The Peacocks were led by three treys from Josh Weeber and Grant Lang. Upper Iowa finished the night shooting 36-of-71 for 50.7 percent from the field. Four Upper Iowa players finished with double-figure scoring led by 19 points from Weeber. Lang added 15 points, while Joey Woods had 13 points and Bo Pagel came off the bench for 10 points.

The Peacocks had a huge second half as they out-scored UMC 56-40 in the second frame. Upper Iowa was 21-of-36 for 58.3 percent on the half and connected on eight threes in the frame.

Upper Iowa had 29 points off turnovers for the game and accumulated 26 second-chance points.

The Golden Eagles were without Ashton Harrell (Sr., G, Houston, Texas/Sports and Rec Management), who came into the game as the team's leading scorer. Harrell suffered a season-ending injury over break. The Golden Eagles will look to continue to fill the scoring void in Harrell's absence. Burns stepped up big Friday to try to fill the void.

Minnesota Crookston will take on Winona State University at 6 p.m. Sat., Jan. 4 as they look to get back on a winning track.
