CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team will host Southwest Minnesota State University Sat., May 4 and Sun., May 5 at the UMC Baseball Field in Crookston, Minn. The games were relocated from Marshall, Minn. due to inclement weather expected to hit the area. The games have also been moved from Fri., May 3 and Sat., May 4 to Sat. May 4 at 1 and 3 p.m. and Sun., May 5 at 12 and 2 p.m.
The Golden Eagles enter the weekend with a 1-38 (1-24 NSIC) mark on the 2013 season. They got their first victory of the season in a 4-3 thriller over University of Minnesota Duluth April 28. UMC had 24 hits yesterday but ultimately fell in a pair of games to Minot State University. The Golden Eagles were led on the games by
Matt Korte (Jr., IF/OF/P, St. Cloud, Minn.), who went 6-for-9 with five runs scored on the day.
Josh Brehmer (Jr., 2B/SS, Roseville, Minn.) leads the team with a .283 batting average. He has nine runs scored and five RBI's on the season. Korte is batting .267 for the year with 11 runs scored and three RBI's.
On the mound, Korte has led the team this season in innings pitched with 36-and-two-thirds. He is 1-7 with an 8.10 ERA this season and has been one of UMC's weekend starters all season long.
J.C. Crane (Sr., C/OF/P, Tucson, Ariz.) has also been a staple on the weekend with a 0-5 mark and a 9.45 ERA.
SMSU comes in with a 13-23-1 mark and an 8-14 NSIC record. Southwest Minnesota State has been led at the plate by Kyle Young, who is hitting .376 with 26 runs scored, four home runs and 21 RBI's. Steven Kremer comes in batting .353 with 14 runs scored and 19 RBI's. On the mound, Brandan Alfson leads the way with a 1-3 mark and a 3.00 ERA in 30 innings pitched.
The games will mean UMC will finish the season with 12-straight home games after not playing a home game until April 25. The games will be the final games at home for three UMC seniors as Crane,
Cesar Espinoza (1B, Tucson, Ariz.) and
Jordan Prill (1B/OF/P, Melrose, Minn.) play their final home games.
