Golden Eagles Drop Pair to Minot State 12-4 and 14-7 in Mid-Week Doubleheader at Home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 12-4 in game one and held an early lead over Minot State University in game two after a strong performance from Richie Navratil (So., P, Blansko, Czech Republic) but ultimately fell 14-7. The Golden Eagles fall to 1-38 (1-24 NSIC) after Wednesday's losses. Minot State improves to 12-22 (4-16 NSIC) after the pair of victories over UMC.
 
Ryan Haggstrom (Fr., C/UT, Apple Valley, Minn.) struggled with command early on and went four innings, giving up eight runs, six of them earned on five hits with seven walks and four strikeouts. Haggstrom would suffer the loss in game one.
 
Minot State University would score four runs in the first inning to start game one. Alex Forshell would score the first run of the game, crossing the plate on a Haggstrom wild pitch. An A.J. Begay double to right center would clear the bases later in the inning, scoring Andrew Roach, Conner Moughtin and Mike Turcotte to make the game 4-0.
 
Haggstrom would improve his control in the second inning but one run would cross for the Beavers as Mitch Olson grounded out to short stop, but Fornshell would cross the plate.
 
Three more would score for Minot State in the fourth inning. Moughton singled up the middle to score Turcotte for the first run of the inning. With the bases loaded, Doug Richter was then hit by a pitch allowing Moughtin to score. Tyler Stevenson was then hit by a pitch allowing Roach to score to make it 7-0.
 
Marcus Campbell (Fr., P, St. Croix Falls, Wis.) would relieve Haggstrom in the fifth. The Beavers would add three runs off of Campbell in the sixth inning. Doug Richter would start things with a double to right center to score Moughtin. Stevenson then singled to right field to score Richter and Roach to make it 11-0 Minot State.
 
The Golden Eagles would finally cut into the Beaver advantage in the sixth inning beginning with a J.C. Crane (Sr., C/OF/P, Tucson, Ariz.) double to left center to bring home Matt Korte (Sr., IF/OF/P, St. Cloud, Minn.). Jordan Prill (Sr., 1B/OF/P, Melrose, Minn.) then crushed a ball to right field for his first home run of the season to bring himself and Crane home and make it 11-3.
 
Moughtin would extend the Minot State lead to 12-3 in the seventh as he tripled to center field to score Olson.
 
Crane would double down the left field line in the seventh for the Golden Eagles to bring home Korte to make it 12-4.
 
Jarrett Duchscher got the win for the Beavers after going six innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits including four strikeouts.
 
Korte had a perfect game to lead the Golden Eagles going 4-for-4 for the game with two runs scored. Crane was 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI's while Cesar Espinoza (Sr., 1B, Tucson, Ariz.) was 2-for-3 for the game.
 
The Beavers were led by Moughtin, who was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI's. A.J. Begay was 2-for-5 with three RBI's while Richter was 2-for-2 with two RBI's and one run scored.
 
Navratil would get the ball in game two, going five innings, giving up six runs, five of them earned, on seven hits.
 
Olson would get the Beavers on the board in the top of the first as Olson singled to right field to score Turcotte to make it 1-0.
 
The Golden Eagles would put together a big inning as Crane singled up the middle to score Korte and Josh Brehmer (Jr., 2B/SS, Roseville, Minn.). Prill then doubled to right center to plate Crane. Colton Haight (Fr., C/OF, Rogers, Minn.) would continue the inning as he reached on an error by the center fielder bringing Prill across the bag to give UMC a 4-1 advantage.
 
The Golden Eagles would add to their lead in the second inning as Prill singled up the middle to score Crane to make it 5-1.
 
Navratil would shut down Minot State in the second, third and fourth to preserve the Beaver lead. However, Minot State would however get to Navratil in the fifth for two runs as Turcotte tripled to left center to plate Jordan Gilmour and Corbyn Shields to make it 5-3.
 
The Beavers would get to Navratil in the top of the sixth as well. Shayne Court plated two runs to tie the game as Begay and Moughtin would score.
 
Ryan Paasch (Jr., P, Sauk Rapids, Minn.) would come on to relieve Navratil after Court's double.
 
After a pair of walks, Gilmour would double to left center to score Brian Vine and Court to make it 7-5. A Fornshell triple would bring Gilmour and Shields home to give Minot State the 9-5 advantage. Trevor Buttermore (Fr., P, North St. Paul, Minn.) would come on to get UMC out of the inning.
 
The Golden Eagles would rally to cut Minot State's lead in the sixth. After a Korte single, Crane would double down the left field line to bring Korte home.
 
Haight would single to score Crane to make it 9-7.
 
Minot State would add to the advantage in the eighth beginning with a Turcotte double to score Gilmour. An Olson double to drive home Turcotte and Fornshell.
 
Olson would then score on a Buttermore balk to make it 13-7.
 
Prill would pitch the ninth for the Golden Eagles. The Beavers would score one run in the ninth as Gilmour singled up the middle to score Shields to make it 14-7.
 
Crane led the team in game two, going 3-for-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored. Korte would go 2-for-5 with three runs scored while Brehmer was 2-for-6 with one run scored.
 
Paasch would get the game two loss after pitching to five batters and getting nobody out, allowing three earned runs on two hits with three walks. Buttermore would go three innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits while Prill pitched one inning, giving up one unearned run on one hit.
 
Doug Rolfson would get the win in relief for the Beavers pitching one-and-one-third inning and giving up two earned runs on four hits.
 
Jamin Heller started for Minot State and pitched four-and-two-thirds innings, giving up five runs, four of them earned, on 10 hits.
 
The Golden Eagles will return to the ball diamond for games currently scheduled for Fri., May 3 and Sat., May 4 against Southwest Minnesota State University. The games are currently scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. Friday and 12 and 2 p.m. Saturday but still have a possibility to be moved to Saturday and Sunday. They were moved from Marshall, Minn., due to a strong chance of inclement weather in Southwest Minnesota. With the games being played in Crookston that will give UMC 12-straight home games to finish off the year after not playing a game at the UMC Baseball Field until April 25.
