CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston will trek to Wayne, Neb., for a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheaders against Wayne State College (Neb.) March 29 at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. and March 30 at 12 and 2 p.m. The Golden Eagles come into the weekend with a 0-17 mark (0-4 NSIC) while Wayne State is 8-6 on the season. Friday's games will mark the conference openers for the Wildcats who had to cancel their NSIC opening series against Southwest Minnesota State University scheduled for March 25-26.
The Golden Eagles opened up their NSIC slate Sunday and Monday with games against No. 11 Minnesota State University, Mankato. UMC showed promise in the series especially in game three of the series as the Golden Eagles had several opportunities in a hard-fought 3-0 loss to the Mavericks. In that game Minnesota Crookston got a stand-out performance on the mound from
Jon Mittag (Jr., P, Glenville, Minn.), who had a perfect game through three innings and a no-hitter through four innings. Mittag finished the game giving up just two hits and two unearned runs in five innings pitched. The Golden Eagles lost 9-0 and 10-0 Sunday night to Minnesota State and 12-2 in game four of the series Monday.
UMC has been led at the plate this season by freshman
Ryan Haggstrom (P/UT, Apple Valley, Minn.), who is hitting .267 with one run scored and one run batted in. Haggstrom broke up two no-hitters from the Mavericks over the weekend.
Josh Brehmer (Jr., 2B/SS, Roseville, Minn.) is currently batting .245 from his leadoff spot with one run scored and two RBI's while
Kameron Crandall (R-Fr., IF/P, Zimmerman, Minn.) is batting .234 with three runs scored and seven RBI's.
On the mound, Haggstrom is also among UMC's leaders with a 2.35 earned runs average in 7.2 innings pitched while
Matt Korte (Jr., P/IF/OF, St. Cloud, Minn.) is 0-4 with a 6.11 ERA in 17.2 innings pitched
J.C. Crane (Sr., C/OF/P, Tucson, Ariz.) comes in with an 0-2 mark and a 8.03 ERA in 12.1 innings pitched.
Wayne State is led at the plate this season by Brandon Lalk, who is batting .452 with five runs scored and seven RBI's in 31 at-bats this season. Blake Brisson is hitting .370 for the Wildcats with seven runs scored and two RBI's.
Tadd Johansen has led the Wildcats on the mound this year with a 4-0 mark in five appearances this season. Johansen has a 0.95 ERA in 28.1 innings pitched. Wayne State's top reliever this year has been Trevor Reeves, who is 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA in 12.2 innings pitched this season.
