Box Score CLEARWATER, Fla. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston baseball team gave up 11 runs in the first three innings as they fell 15-4 to Mansfield University in their second game of the Winning Inning Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. Friday evening at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater, Fla. Jack Russell Stadium is the former Spring Training home of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Golden Eagles fall to 0-10 on the year while Mansfield improves to 4-2 with the win.
Matt Korte (Jr., P/IF/OF, St. Cloud, Minn.) got the start on the mound but struggled with his command as he would give up six runs, five of them earned, on five hits in one inning as he suffered his third loss of the season.
The Mountaineers started out the scoring with one out in the top of the first as Matt Fisher singled through the right side to plate Seth Tressler. They made it 2-0 later in the inning as Conor Thompson flew out to right field to score Fisher.
Mansfield would make it 7-0 in the top of the second. Tressler doubled down the left field line with the bases loaded to score Dylan Woodworth, Brandon Miller and Max Miller and chase Korte from the game.
Trevor Buttermore (Fr., P, North St. Paul, Minn.) would come in relief for the Golden Eagles. Fisher would reach on an error by
Tony Madsen (Jr., IF, Mounds View, Minn.) to score Tressler. Fisher would then score as Anthony Renz grounded into a double play.
The Mountaineers would add three more runs off Buttermore in the top of third. Tressler started off the scoring in the inning as he doubled to right field to score Brandon Miller and pinch hitter Stanton Tentnowski. Fisher would then reach on another error by Madsen, allowing Tressler to score. An error by
Jordan Prill (Sr., 1B/OF/P, Melrose, Minn.) would allow Joey Andrews to reach base and would allow Fisher to score.
The Golden Eagles began to cut into the lead in the bottom of third when
Kameron Crandall (R-Fr., IF/OF/P), who came into the game with five RBI's to lead UMC, doubled to right field to score Korte and
Josh Brehmer (Jr., 2B/SS, Roseville, Minn.).
With Buttermore still on the mound for the Golden Eagles, the Mountaineers would add one more run in the top of the fourth to make it 12-2 as Brandon Miller hit a single to right field to drive in Max Miller.
Ryan Haggstrom (Fr., P/UT, Apple Valley, Minn.) would relieve Buttermore in the fifth and put up a strong performance on the bump, going five innings with two earned runs and three hits given up. Haggstrom has been a valuable asset at pitcher this season as he has given up just two runs in 7.2 runs pitched this season on four hits.
Mansfield would add one more run in the seventh as Brandon Miller reached on a fielder's choice which scored Renz. The final Mountaineer run would come as Brandon Miller singled to left field to plate Stephen Stopper.
Joey Zuniga got the win for Mansfield as he went five innings, giving up three hits and two earned runs. Greg Dayhoff would pitch two innings for the Mountaineers while Dave Forbes and Joel Worthington would each pitch one for Mansfield.
The UMC bats were led by Brehmer, who was 2-for-5 with one run scored while Madsen was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Golden Eagles will continue the Winning Inning Invitational tomorrow as they play a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. ET against Mansfield.
