CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston baseball team will head to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome for a non-conference doubleheader against Valley City State University Tuesday in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Golden Eagles enter Tuesday with a record of 0-4 on the season after dropping two doubleheaders to Upper Iowa University and University of Mary over the weekend at the Metrodome. UMC was led at the plate over the weekend by
Brooks Miller (So., IF/OF/P, Moorhead, Minn.). Miller hit .444 with four hits in nine at-bats with one run scored and one RBI. In addition to Miller,
Ryan Haggstrom (Fr., C/1B, Apple Valley, Minn.) had a solid weekend hitting .400 with a triple and one run scored.
Matt Korte (Jr., P/IF/OF, St. Cloud, Minn.) hit .375 on the weekend with one run scored and one RBI.
On the mound, UMC was led by Korte, who pitched five innings in a start against the Peacocks Friday. Korte gave up only three hits and one earned run on the game. Out of the bullpen, the Golden Eagles got solid outings from
Kyle Kleven (So., P, Larimore, N.D.) and
Ryan Paasch (Jr., P, Sauk Rapids, Minn.). Kleven pitched one-and-two-thirds innings against U-Mary allowing two hits and no earned runs. Paasch went three innings of relief against Upper Iowa Saturday, giving up three hits and two earned runs.
Valley City State enters Tuesday with a 1-3 mark after getting a win and three losses against Clarke College (Iowa) Feb. 10 and 11. The Vikings have been led at the plate so far by outfielder Mike Gershman's .333 average with two runs scored on four hits. In addition, first baseman Thomas Houdek is batting .286 on the year with one RBI.
On the mound, Valley City State is led by right handed pitcher Bryce Venaas, who went five innings of the shutout baseball against Clarke. Venaas comes in with a 0.00 ERA and has only given up five hits so far this season.
