BISMARCK, N.D. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston put up a strong second-half comeback bid but 12 first-half three-pointers proved too much as the University of Mary upended the Golden Eagles 77-63 at McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck, N.D. The Golden Eagles remain winless in the NSIC as they fall to 3-20 (0-19 NSIC). U-Mary improves to 4-19 (3-16) ending a 13-game losing streak that dated back to their first win over the Golden Eagles back in the middle of December.
The Golden Eagles were led by
Ashton Harrell (Jr., G, Houston, Texas), who continued his strong play for UMC as of late with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles also got several strong performances off the bench including four three-points from
Tim Lubke (So., G, St. Paul, Minn.), who finished with 14 points on the game.
Joseph Moorer (Fr., G, Los Angeles, Calif.) came off the bench for nine points and three assists. The Golden Eagles would shoot 21-of-48 for 43.8 percent from the field and 9-of-22 for 40.9 percent from trey.
U-Mary was on fire from three, especially in the first half, as they finished with 14 threes, shooting 51.9 percent from beyond the arc for the game. The Marauders were led by Josh Turner's 20 points and nine rebounds. Turner had six treys on the game. Brandon Tyler added 17 points on the game with five three-pointers while Jalen Jaspers chipped in 16 and Marc Musungayi added 12. The Marauders finished the game shooting 29-of-59 for 59.2 percent from the field.
The Marauders out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 29 to 22 led by Turners' nine boards. Sparkman led the Golden Eagles with seven on the game.
The University of Mary got out to a 46-27 advantage in the first half against the Golden Eagles. UMC kept it close early as the Golden Eagles had a one-point advantage at the 16:20 mark following a
Justin Rake (Sr., G, Petal, Miss.) trey. After the game was knotted at the 15:28 mark, the Marauders were able to go on a 12-2 run to get out to a 10-point lead (20-10) after hitting four-consecutive three-pointers beginning with a trey from Josh Turner at the 13:13 mark. Turner had back-to-back-to-back trifectas during the run.
The Golden Eagles were cut back into the lead making it a six-point lead for U-Mary at the 7:08 mark of the first half following a Moorer three-pointer. But the Marauders would take momentum again as they would extend their advantage to 14 points following free throws from Tyler. The Marauders would break out to a 19-point lead with another Turner three right before the break.
UMC was guided by Harrell, who tallied 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting in the opening period. Moorer came off the bench for five points and three assists in the opening half. The Golden Eagles shot 8-of-22 in the first half for 36.4 percent and were 4-of-10 for 40.0 percent from three.
U-Mary was guided by six first-half threes from Turner as the team would control the pace of the game with their shooting from behind the three-point line as the team would hit 12 first-half treys. Turner finished the opening period with 18 points while Tyler chipped in 14 points off the bench with four threes of his own. U-Mary was 16-of-26 for 61.5 percent from the field and 12-of-19 for 63.2 percent from three.
The Golden Eagles jumped out of the locker room as they cut the U-Mary advantage to 15 points following an
Almir Krdzalic (Sr., G, Sioux Falls, S.D.) three and made a free throw from
Brandon Burns (Jr., F, Baton Rouge, La.). The Marauders were quickly able to get their lead back out to 19 after a Marc Musungayi jumper. U-Mary would extend their lead to 21 after a Jalen Jaspers lay-up.
UMC would make a dent in the U-Mary advantage as Lubke hit back-to-back threes to make it 59-44 with 12:01 left in the game. The Marauders go up by 17 but buckets from Krdzalic, Lubke and
James Sparkman (R-Jr., F, Ypsilanti, Mich.) would cut the lead to 11 for the Marauders with 9:04 remaining in the game.
U-Mary would get the lead out to 13 once more at the 6:47 mark but UMC would use a 5-0 run to cut it to an eight-point lead (65-57) with 5:25 remaining after a lay-up from Sparkman and a three from Lubke. However, the Marauders would respond to get the lead back out to 13 after five points from Jaspers. U-Mary would hold on for a 77-63 win over UMC despite the second-half comeback bid for the Golden Eagles.
The Marauders were again without leading scorer Alex Dorr for the game.
