MSU Moorhead Drains 17 Threes to Defeat Minnesota Crookston 102-77

Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. - Minnesota State University Moorhead out-scored the University of Minnesota Crookston 59-36 in the second half as they defeated the University of Minnesota Crookston 102-77 Sat., Dec. 14 at Alex Nemzek Hall in Moorhead, Minn. MSUM was guided by 17 threes on the night. The Golden Eagles played toe-to-toe with MSU Moorhead in the first half, and led by as many as six points, but were unable to match their intensity in the second half as they fell to the Dragons. MSU Moorhead remains undefeated with Saturday's win as they improved to 9-0 (5-0 NSIC). UMC falls to 4-5 (1-4 NSIC) with the loss.

Minnesota Crookston was paced by 16 points from Ashton Harrell (Sr., G, Houston, Texas/Sports and Rec Management), who was 6-of-10 from the field and had three treys. Tyler West, Jr. (Jr., F, Portland, Ore./Communications) added 15 points and five boards while Brandon Burns (Sr., F, Baton Rouge, La./Sports and Rec Management), relegated to the bench Saturday, had a solid game for the Golden Eagles with 13 points. John Hughes (So., Tualatin, Ore./Management) earned his first-career start Saturday and had nine points and four boards while Derrick Redd (So., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) had nine points off of the bench.

UMC finished the game with an outstanding field goal percentage, hitting 28-of-54 of their shots for 51.9 percent and hit 8-of-18 threes for 44.4 percent. The Golden Eagles finished with 15 turnovers on the night and were out-rebounded by MSU Moorhead 42-24, including giving up 16 offensive rebounds.

MSU Moorhead was led by a career night from Prescott Williams, who had 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting with four three-pointers. Jordan Riewer added 13 points, including three treys, while Tarell Clark and Aaron Lien each had 12. Lien had four treys on the night. Clark completed a double-double with 11 boards. Urbane Bingham added 11 points. The Dragons went 36-of-67 for 53.7 percent from the field and were 17-of-29 for 58.6 percent from three.

The Golden Eagles came out with great energy in the first half of Saturday's game against the undefeated Dragons. UMC would race out to a 9-3 advantage following a Lubke lay-in at the 18:03 mark. The Golden Eagles would go back-and-forth with the Dragons but would still hold a six-point advantage (18-12) following a Burns jumper with 14:29 remaining. From there though, MSU Moorhead would go on a 9-0 run stamped by a Bingham dunk and two Malik Wood free throws to make it MSUM 21, UMC 18, to give the Dragons a three-point advantage with 13:07 left in the first half. MSU Moorhead would get up by as many as nine (44-35) in the first half, following a Williams free throw, but the Golden Eagles would not go away.

UMC cut the lead to six following free throws from Hughes and Harrell. MSU Moorhead would end the half with a Clark lay-in to give them a 46-38 lead over the Golden Eagles.

Minnesota Crookston would be led in the first half by nine points from Harrell on 3-of-5 shooting. West added seven points, including going 4-of-6 from the charity stripe while Burns came off the bench for seven points on 3-of-5 shooting. The Golden Eagles shot 13-of-28 for 46.4 percent from the field and were 5-of-11 from downtown for 45.5 percent in the first half led by two Harrell's treys.

MSU Moorhead looked to Williams in the first half for 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting including two treys. Clark chipped in eight points off the bench while Riewer and Bingham each had seven. The Dragons shot 15-of-29 for 51.7 percent and were 7-of-15 for 46.7 percent from three led by two treys from Williams and two from Lien.

MSU Moorhead dominated the second half from the on-set, as they shot 21-of-38 from the field for 55.3 percent and hit 10-of-14 threes for 71.4 percent.

The Golden Eagles will return to play Fri., Dec, 20 on the road at Bemidji State University at 8 p.m.
