Box Score ABERDEEN, S.D.- Northern State University used a strong first half getting out to an 11-0 lead early against the University of Minnesota Crookston and didn't look back as they won 79-64 at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. The Golden Eagles were unable to get much going as they struggled from the field just shooting 35.7 percent for the first half compared to Northern State, who finished the first half shooting 54.1 percent. Northern State went into the locker room up 46-25. The Golden Eagles would get things together in the second half and actually outscore Northern State 39-33 in the second half, but it would be too little too late as the first half did UMC in.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 4-4 (1-3 NSIC) on the season while Northern State improves to 8-2 (3-1 NSIC).
The Golden Eagles were led on the night by a double-double from
Tyler West, Jr. (Jr., F, Portland, Ore./Communications), who finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Ashton Harrell (Sr., G, Houston, Texas/Sports and Rec Management) added 10 points while
Brandon Burns (Sr., F, Baton Rouge, La./Sports and Rec Management) and
Kevin Larson (Jr., G, New Ulm, Minn,/Sports and Rec Management) each added nine points. The Golden Eagles shot 21-of-53 for 39.6 percent for the night and were 7-of-19 for 36.8 percent from three. Minnesota Crookston shot 44 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from trey in the second half. UMC would finish with 16 turnovers on the night.
Northern State was led by a double-double from Trent Zomer with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Skye Warwick added 16 points, including four three-pointers while Michael Schreiber came off the bench for 11. The Wolves shot 32-of-71 for 45.1 percent from the field and were 6-of-22 for 27.3 percent from three. They out-rebounded UMC 45-34.
The Northern State Wolves went into the half with a 46-25 lead over Minnesota Crookston as the Golden Eagles struggled to get much going in the early going against Northern State. The Golden Eagles were 10-of-28 for 35.7 percent in the first half and just 2-of-10 for 20 percent from three. The Golden Eagles were led by seven points apiece from Harrell and Larson. West chipped in six points and four rebounds. The Golden Eagles had seven turnovers in the first half, as well.
Northern State hit six three-pointers in the first half led by four from Warwick, who had 12 points in the first frame. Zomer had a near double-double for the Wolves in the first half with 14 points and nine rebounds. Northern State shot lights out in the first half hitting 18-of-33 shots for 54.5 percent and were 6-of-12 from three for 50 percent.
Down by as many as 28 (72-44) with 8:09 remaining, the Golden Eagles would begin chipping into Northern State's lead to make a run as they would go on a 15-2 run to get to within 16 at 75-59. The run was led by three pointers from
Sam Howell (Jr., G, Seattle, Wash./Sports and Rec Management) and
Konner Goettsche (Fr., F, Plymouth, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) UMC would close to within 15 (77-62) following a
Tomas Parker (So., F, Pequot Lakes, Minn./Management) three-pooint play but it would be too little too late as the Golden Eagles fell 79-64.
Minnesota Crookston will head to Minnesota State University Moorhead Sat., Dec. 14 for another NSIC contest at 8 p.m. at Nemzek Hall in Moorhead, Minn.
