CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team struggled from the field in the second half as they fell to Mayville State University 91-69 Tuesday evening at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles fall to 2-1 in non-conference play this season. Mayville State remains at 3-0, as Tuesday was an exhibition contest for the Comets.
UMC led by as many as 14 in the first half, leading by that much at the 10:03 mark but Mayville State caught fire from the field from then on out and the Golden Eagles went cold from the field in the second half. Mayville State finished the game shooting 33-of-67 for 49.3 percent and were 12-of-28 for 42.9 percent from behind the three-point arc. The Comets had three players score over 20 points on the night. Center Marcissa McMillan paced Mayville State with 27 points and nine rebounds. Sharp shooter Hailey Longtin added 25 points and was red hot from beyond the arc as she hit 6-of-10 attempts from downtown. Liza Hoglo added 20 points, including shooting 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.
In addition, Sabrina Rude came off the bench for 13 points, including connecting on 3-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Comets narrowly out-rebounded UMC 38-37 led by McMillan's nine boards while Samantha Heier added seven.
The Golden Eagles shot 26-of-66 for 39.4 percent for the game after having a very solid first half, connecting on 17-of-33 shots for 51.5 percent. Minnesota Crookston struggled from the field in the second half, connecting on just 9-of-33 attempts for 27.3 percent. The Golden Eagles wete 5-of-24 for 20.8 percent from beyond the arc.
UMC was led on the game by
Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn./Early Childhood Education), who had 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field with seven boards.
Jaya Perkins (So., G, Lakeville, Minn./Criminal Justice) came off the bench for 11 points while
Ebony Livingston (Jr., G/F, Minneapolis, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) added nine points and
Cienna Walker (Jr., G, Ajax, Ontario/Marketing) chipped in eight points.
The Golden Eagles were led on the boards by Moenkedick and Walker. They had 22 turnovers compared to Mayville State's 19 turnovers.
Minnesota Crookston controlled the pace of play early, being up 11 at the 13:50 mark of the first half after a Moenkedick lay-up. Mayville State would cut the lead to six at the 12:44 mark after a McMillan jumper but the Golden Eagles would quickly get their advantage out to 14 after a
Selina Barnes (Fr., G, Colorado Springs, Colo./Health Science) three and would take it out to their biggest lead of 14, after a Livingston lay-in.
The Comets would respond after an emotional timeout speech from Mayville State coach Dennis Hutter and would cut the UMC advantage to three after a Longtin lay-up with 6:25 remaining in the first.
A Hoglo three-pointer would tie things up with five minutes left but the Golden Eagles would quickly get back out to a four-point advantage after back-to-back free throws from Moenkedick.
Mayville State would control the remainder of the first and get out to a 49-41 advantage going into the break after a McMillan lay-up.
The Comets would control the second half with their strong shooting. UMC would only get as close as six after a Thielman lay-up with 13:58 left but Mayville State would win the game by 22 points (91-69).
The Golden Eagles will have a quick turnaround and will play Finlandia University Wed, Nov. 20 at 5 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team. The Golden Eagle men will play Finlandia at 7 p.m.
