Fast Tempo and Breakout Performances From Redd and Parker Guide Golden Eagles to 76-68 Win Over Northland

Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston showcased their new up-tempo style Friday night as they came away with a 76-68 non-conference victory over Northland College as part of a triple header featuring UMC women's basketball, volleyball and men's basketball at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season while Northland drops to 0-1.

The meeting between the Golden Eagles and Northland, meant the return of LumberJack head coach Scott Sorenson, who was an assistant for four seasons under UMC head man Jeff Oseth prior to taking over Northland at the start of the 2012-13 season.

The Golden Eagles had 41 points in the bench on Friday, led by a pair of breakout performances as redshirt sophomore Derrick Redd (G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) looked at home in the fast-break up-tempo offense as he had 11 points and two assists on the night. UMC also had a great night from Tomas Parker (Jr., C, Pequot Lakes, Minn./Management) who came off the bench and utilized his size advantage over the Northland posts to tally 15 points and six rebounds.

The Golden Eagles would finish the night shooting 26-of-48 for 54.2 percent and were 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Tyler West, Jr. (F, Portland, Ore./Communication), who led Minnesota Crookston in scoring Tuesday night with 15 against Valley City State, only had 2 points on the night but had a big presence with 12 boards. Brandon Burns (Sr., F, Baton Rouge, La./Sports and Rec Management) finished with 11 points while Ashton Harrell (Sr., G, Houston, Texas/Sports and Rec Management), Lucas Reller (Jr., G, Lead, S.D./Management) and Kevin Larson (Jr., G, New Ulm, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) all finished with seven. Larson added four assists on the night, as did Harrell.

Northland lived and died by the three ball, attempting 36, but hitting just 10 for 27.8 percent. The LumberJacks were 19-of-66 for 28.8 percent on the game. Carnell Sheppard and Zach Ringhouse led the team with 18 points. Ryan McDermott was the three-ball specialist for Northland, hitting 4-of-10 and tallying 16 points on the game. Sheppard led the team with nine boards and also had seven assists, while former Minnesota Crookston player Mike Boebel had five points and nine boards in his return to Lysaker Gymnasium.

The Golden Eagles went into the break up nine and would win by eight after Northland gave the Golden Eagles a test late in the game, out-scoring Minnesota Crookston 40-39 in the second half. The LumberJacks would get as close as seven late after a McDermott three but the Golden Eagles would be able to ice the game late.

Minnesota Crookston will return to action Wed., Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. against Finlandia University.
