Box Score WINONA, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston went on an eight-minute scoring drought in the first half that saw Winona State University out-score UMC 13-0 to ignite a 68-41 win for the Warriors over the Golden Eagles. Winona State hit 13 three-pointers on the game, shot 41.0 percent as a team and 56.5 percent from behind the three-point line. UMC continues a five-game losing streak. The Golden Eagles fall to 5-11 (2-10 NSIC). The Warriors improve to 14-5 (8-3 NSIC) on the year.
The Golden Eagles were led by six points apiece from
Alexa Thielman (Fr., G, Buffalo, Minn.),
Ashley Martell (So., G, Somerset, Wis.) and
Carli Bunning (Sr., F, Boone, Iowa). UMC finished the game shooting 17-of-59 for 28.8 percent and were 3-of-18 from beyond the arc for 16.7 percent.
Winona State was 13-of-23 from beyond the arc for 56.5 percent and 25-of-61 for 41.0 percent overall. Katie Wolff led the Warriors with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from behind the three-point line. Becca Friestleben followed up her nine three-pointers against Bemidji State with four versus the Golden Eagles and finished with 12 points while Marieanna Dulas chipped in 10 points on the night.
The Warriors out-rebounded UMC 44-35 on the game led by nine rebounds off the bench from Kate Hartman.
The two teams would play back-and-forth early on in the first half. The Golden Eagles knotted the game 8-8 following a
Jaya Perkins (R-Fr., G, Lakeville, Minn.) runner in the lane. Winona State was then able to go on a 5-0 run led by a four-point possession with a Busch lay-up and then a rebound off a free throw allowed Dulas to score another bucket to make it 13-8 Warriors. UMC was able to close it to 13-10 using a
Katrina Moenkedick (Fr., F, Perham, Minn.) lay-up but the Warriors would extend the lead out to 25-10 following messy possessions where the Golden Eagles weren't able to get shots off due to inopportune turnovers. UMC went over eight minutes without a basket. Winona State was able to gets threes from Wolff, Friestleben and Dulas during UMC's drought followed up by a three-point play from Tessa Wells.
UMC ended the drought with free throws from
Laurie Tyson (Sr., C, Rosemount, Minn.) at the 1:35 mark to cut it to 25-12. Winona State would go into the break with a 27-12 advantage at the break.
The Golden Eagles were led by four points apiece from Moenkedick and Tyson. UMC struggled in the half shooting 5-of-28 for 17.9 percent and were 0-of-9 from beyond the arc. Winona State just barely won the rebounding battle 23-22 led by five boards from Wolff. Moenkedick and
Erika McRoberts (Fr., F/C, Byron, Minn.) each had four rebounds for UMC.
Winona State shot 10-of-31 for 32.3 percent from the field and were 5-of-13 for 38.5 percent from beyond the arc. Wolff led the Warriors with six points on two treys. Dulas added five points while Abby Busch and Kelsey Andrist each had four points.
Winona State got back-to-back-to-back threes from Friestleben to open up the second half and get out to a 36-12 advantage. The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 19 after
Mike Roysland used a timeout and the Golden Eagles got buckets from Thielman and McRoberts and then a three from the wing from Martell.
UMC would continue to cut the deficit following another trey from Martell to make it 42-26 with just over 13 minutes left. Winona State followed it with two threes from Wolff and another trey from Dulas to get their advantage out to 51-26 with just under 11 minutes remaining. The Golden Eagles would cut it to 19 again 58-39 using a spirited effort from several players who normally do not see extensive playing time.
Carli Bunning (Sr., F, Boone, Iowa) led the way with four points off the bench during the run to cut the Warrior lead. Winona State was able to get their advantage back out to 27 (68-41) and would win by that score
The Golden Eagles will return to action Fri., Jan. 25 at Lysaker Gymnasium against Northern State University, the last team UMC defeated Jan. 5 on the road in Aberdeen, S.D.
