Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagles fought hard but could not overcome a poor night shooting, losing to the Bemidji State University Beavers 58-48 Tuesday night at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles were able to out-rebound the Beavers 48-39 but shot 23.1% from the field and 17.2% from beyond the arc. UMC falls to a record of 5-9 (2-8 NSIC) while BSU moves to 7-7 (3-7 NSIC).
Ashley Martell (So, G, Somerset, Wis.), found her touch in the second half hitting 3 three-point shots for nine of her 11 points on the night.
Katrina Moenkedick (Fr., F, Perham, Minn.) added nine points and pulled in six rebounds.
Erika McRoberts (Fr., F/C, Byron, Minn.) continued her strong play off the bench, scoring nine points and contributing three offensive rebounds. However, this was not enough for the Golden Eagles to overcome 20 turnovers and a 15-of-65 shooting night.
Bemidji State benefitted from a strong game by Kate Warmack, who scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds. Morgan Lee led the scoring for the Beavers with 14. Junior College transfer Lanae Rash added 12 points on the game. Bemidji State shot 22-of-54 for 40.7 percent for the game. Shannon Thompson and Rash each had three assists on the game for the Beavers.
The first half of the contest featured back and forth action with both teams going on big runs. The Golden Eagles would start slow, not hitting their first shot from the field until 3:25 into the game when
Brittani Wiese (Sr.,G, Albertville, Minn) had her first of three steals and dished one of her four first half assists to Martell, sparking a 9-2 run to bring the score to 9-7 with 14:00 remaining. UMC dominated on the offensive boards in the first half, tallying 14 with Martell contributing three. The Beavers would retaliate with an 11-0 run with 4:59 remaining to take a 13-24 lead. The Golden Eagles would answer right back, ending the half on an 8-0 run to go to the locker room at 24-21.
The second half was a different story with the Beavers not leading by more than six until the 2:16 mark. The Golden Eagles used 22 offensive rebounds to keep the game close and also had 11 steals as a team. UMC would get as close as bringing the score to 33-32 with 13:52 left in the game but never held the lead in the second half. The Golden Eagles would again make it close with 6:30 left on the clock but would have trouble from the free-throw line, going on a 2-of-9 run from charity stripe over the next five minutes, 13-of-21 overall (61.9%). The Beavers would use this to their advantage, shooting 11-of-13 (84.6%) from the line in the second half to secure the victory for BSU.
The Golden Eagles next travel to Fayette Iowa on Friday, January 18
th to face Upper Iowa University, followed by Winona State University on Saturday, January 19
th. UMC returns to Lysaker Gymnasium on Friday, January 25
th to host Northern State University at 6 p.m., followed by the men's game at 8 p.m.
