From Gridiron to Hardwood
The University of Minnesota, Crookston has added Golden Eagle starting quarterback A.J. Barge (R-Fr., G, Carrollton, Ga.) to the men's basketball roster for the second semester. Barge set several passing records as he led UMC to two NSIC victories this season. Barge passed for over 1,600 yards on the season. He will hope his success continues on the hardwood as he joins Bemidji State's Lance Rongstad as starting NSIC quarterbacks who also play basketball for their respective teams. Barge did not appear in his first two games as a Golden Eagle but did suit up on the road against the Dragons and Wolves.

• Added Production From Harrell

Since conference play began Dec. 1, junior college transfer guard Ashton Harrell is averaging 8.0 points per game. In non-conference play Harrell only averaged 2.75 points in four games. Harrell had a season-high 16 points Dec. 8 on the road against ranked St. Cloud State while he also tallied double figures with 15 points versus Bemidji State. Harrell had eight points his last time out against
Northern State.

•Lubke on Fire From Downtown
Tim Lubke (So., G, St. Paul, Minn.) hit five three-pointers to give the Golden Eagles a chance in their last home game against University of Mary. After his success in the last game, Lubke's three-point percentage catapulted to 55.2 percent, which is second in the entire NSIC. The Golden Eagles will look to continue to hope Lubke's hot shooting continues as UMC faces Wayne State and Augustana

The Scoop

The University of Minnesota, Crookston men's and women's basketball team will host Wayne State College (Neb.) and Augustana College (S.D.) as they open up their 2013 home slate. The Golden Eagle women's team will have a tough weekend as both the Vikings and Wildcats were ranked in the last USA Today Division II Coaches' Poll released Jan. 8. Wayne State is ranked No. 22 and Augustana No. 13.

Previewing the Golden Eagles
    Men

The UMC men's basketball team was swept last weekend on the road against the two teams that lead the NSIC North division in MSU Moorhead and Northern State. The Golden Eagles put up a hard-fought performance against MSU Moorhead Friday but ultimately fell 71-66. Saturday, UMC struggled to find a rhythm as the Golden Eagles fell 66-47 to the Wolves.
UMC has been led this season by junior college transfer Brandon Burns (F, Baton Rouge, La.). The 6-6 Burns comes in averaging 12.7 points per game. Senior point guard Almir Krdzalic (G, Sioux Falls, S.D.) has also put together a solid start to the season as he is averaging 9.6 points per game. UMC however needs to find added production from its three other starters in James Sparkman (R-Jr., F, Ypsilanti, Mich.), Justin Rake (Sr., G, Petal, Miss.) and Broderick Schmidt (Sr., F, Marion, S.D.).

Previewing the Wildcats

    Men

The Wayne State men's team comes in with a 8-5 (2-5 NSIC) mark. The Wildcats are led by three players who come in averaging double-figure scoring paced by 5-11 senior guard Amry Shelby, who comes in averaging 16.0 points per game. 6-4 foward Derrell Williams (10.5 points per game) and 6-4 guard LaTroy Wright (10.2 points per game), also come in averaging double figures.

Previewing the Vikings

Men
Augustana comes into the weekend with a 9-2 (5-2 NSIC) mark and are coming off a split with a loss to Minnesota State and a win over Concordia-St. Paul. The Vikings are led by 6-1 senior guard Cameron McCaffrey's 19.8 points per game. Augustana is currently in a tie for second place in the NSIC South Division.
