Golden Eagles Earn Pair of Victories to End Ferris State Invitational 3-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston wrapped up the 2012 Ferris State Invitational with a 3-1 mark after defeating Alderson-Broaddus College 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 26-24) and Clarion University 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21). UMC's 3-1 record to open the season matches last year's record after the first four matches of the season.
 
The Golden Eagles started off the day with a hard-fought match with the Battlers of Alderson-Broaddus College but despite hard-fought sets UMC was able to pick up a decisive 3-0 sweep over their foes from Philippi, W.V. The Golden Eagles carried the theme of solid team play over from Friday's win against Glenville State  College as several players had solid matches for UMC. The Golden Eagles were led offensively by Katie Miedtke (Jr., MH, Maple Grove, Minn.), Brittany Looker (So., OH, Rochester, Minn.) and Amanda Swann (Sr., OH, Rochester Hills, Mich.) as all three players reached eight kills on the morning. UMC hit .119 as a team as the offensive attack was directed by setter Paige Mitchell (R-Jr., West Palm, Beach, Fla.), who had 19 assists on the game. Lindsey Rees (R-Jr., Bronson, Mich.) added nine assists.
 
Defensively the Golden Eagles held strong as they were able to hold the Battlers to a .000 attack percentage. Chelsea Wiesner (Jr., Lib., Rochester, Minn.) paced UMC with 11 digs while Rees added 10 for the match. Swann added two solo blocks and one block assist for the Golden Eagles.
 
Alderson-Broaddus was offensively by four kills apiece by Kayla Peterson, Ashley MacDonald and Katie Bedel. Peterson had eight assists for the Battlers.
 
Defensively, MacDonald had 14 digs while Jillian Brown added 13 digs. Victoria Morgan had six block assists for the Battlers.
 
The second match of the day was a battle of the Golden Eagles as UMC faced off against Clarion University. The University of Minnesota, Crookston fell behind early as they dropped the first set 25-18 to Clarion but they showed resiliency as they bounced back and took three-straight sets (25-22, 25-22, 25-21) in order to pick up the win and end the Ferris State Invitational on a winning note.
 
Alexandra Skeeter (Jr., OH/S, Milwaukee, Wis.) led the University of Minnesota, Crookston with 11 kills. Miedtke added seven kills for UMC and hit .278 for the match. Alyssa Schneider (Jr., MH, Racine, Wis.) also had seven kills and hit .294 for the match. Mitchell had 20 assists on the match.
 
Defensively, Wiesner had 15 digs while Looker added 14. Schneider led UMC with one solo block and four block assists.
 
Clarion's offense was paced by 12 kills from Hannah Heeter and 10 kills from Rebecca Webb. Laura Subject had 28 assists on the day. The Golden Eagles of Clarion hit .075 on the match.
 
Defensively, Subject led the way with 15 digs while Rebecca Ferragonio added 14. Heeter had four block assists.
 
The University of Minnesota, Crookston will head to Duluth, Minn., next weekend for their second tournament of the year as they compete in the Minnesota Duluth Invite. The Golden Eagles will face Ferris State University on Sept. 7 and Shippensburg University and UMD on Sept. 8.
