Box Score 2 (Crookston, Minn.)- Winona State University (WSU) finished off a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Baseball series sweep of the University of Minnesota, Crookston on a cold, blustery afternoon today in Crookston, Minn. The Warriors took game one 7-6 and the nightcap 17-4 in seven innings.
WSU improves to 18-13 overall and 13-7 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston falls to 8-23 overall and 3-15 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to NSIC action on Wednesday, April 18 at 4 p.m. when they face Bemidji State University in a doubleheader at Jim Karn Field in Crookston, Minn.
Game One Recap
The Golden Eagles bolted out to a 4-0 lead before giving up seven runs to WSU over the fourth through the seventh innings. U of M, Crookston would not go down without a fight scoring two runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning and leaving runners at second and third while falling 7-6. Kyle Sill was 3-4 with a run batted in (RBI) for the Warriors. Nate Van Roekel hit a two-run homerun while Ryan Ledvina hit a solo homerun. Mike Wasilik and Derek Wojcik each added two hits. Brandon Verthein threw five innings allowing four runs on five hits while striking out one and walking three to get the win. Lucas Warren threw the final two innings allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out three and walking one to get the save.
Charlie Pelzer (So, SS, Roseville, Minn.),
P.J. Zwach (Sr, 3B, St. Paul, Minn.) and
Jordan Prill (Jr, 1B/DH, Melrose, Minn.) each had two hits for U of M, Crookston with Prill adding two RBI and Pelzer and Zwach driving in one.
Ryan Paasch (So, RHP, Sauk Rapids, Minn.) and
Joe Miller (Fr, RHP, Winona, Minn.) threw valiantly for the Golden Eagles. Paasch threw four innings allowing four runs on eight hits while walking four. Miller threw three innings in relief and was tagged with the loss allowing three runs on three hits while striking out two and walking three.
Game Two Recap
The Warriors pounded out 17 runs on 15 hits and rolled to a 17-4 victory in a game called due to the ten-run rule after seven innings. Van Roekel went 3-4 with seven RBI including a grand slam homerun. Kyle Sill went 3-3 with two RBI including a two-run homerun. Cody Strang added two hits and two RBI as did Wasilik. Seth McMullen added two hits and an RBI. Jamie Soyk threw seven innings allowing four runs (three earned) on ten hits while striking out two.
Prill and
Josh Brehmer (So, 2B, Roseville, Minn.) each had two hits and two RBI for U of M, Crookston.
