Northern State Sweeps Golden Eagles in Hard Fought NSIC Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Crookston, Minn.)- With unseasonably warm temperatures and a strong wind blowing in at the UMC Baseball Field, the scene was set for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Baseball doubleheader battle between the University of Minnesota, Crookston and Northern State University (NSU). The two squads did not disappoint with two hard-fought games and the Wolves prevailing 3-1 and 8-3 in ten innings to take the sweep.

Northern State University improves to 8-13 overall and 3-5 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston falls to 7-13 overall and 2-6 in the NSIC.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, April 3 when they travel to Concordia-Moorhead for a non-conference game. First-pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. U of M, Crookston returns to NSIC action at home on Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7 when they host Augustana College in a pair of doubleheaders at the UMC Baseball Field. Games begin at 12 p.m. each day.

Game One Recap

NSU opened up a 2-0 lead after 2.5 innings and held on for the 3-1 win. Clint Manzo threw seven innings allowing one run on seven hits while striking out four and walking two to get the win. Brent Lawrence went 2-2 with a run batted in (RBI). Jordan Flick (Jr, RHP, Dassel, Minn.) threw six innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking four to take the loss. Charlie Pelzer (So, SS, Roseville, Minn.), Jordan Osmundson (Fr, RF, East Grand Forks, Minn.) and Ben Lazzari (Sr, OF, Shakopee, Minn.) each had two hits for U of M, Crookston. Lazzari also had an RBI.

Game Two Recap

NSU scored three runs in the top half of the third and held  a 3-0 lead until the Golden Eagles tied the game with two in the bottom of the seventh and one in the bottom of the eighth sending the game to extra innings. However, the Wolves exploded for five runs in the top half of the tenth to win 8-3. Trent Bestland appeared in relief of Robbie Rocamora to get the win. He threw two innings allowing one run (unearned) on one hit. Rocamora threw seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking two. Jesse Gonzalez went 3-5 with a sac bunt. Lawrence added two hits and two RBI. Zach Miller also added a hit and two RBI. Matt Korte (So, RHP, St. Cloud, Minn.) took the loss allowing four runs (two earned) on ten hits over nine innings pitched. He struck out four and walked one. Josh Brehmer (So, 2B, Roseville, Minn.) and Osmundson each had two hits.
