Box Score 2 (Crookston, Minn.)- Upper Iowa University (UIU) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in game one and scored in every inning except the third in the nightcap as they swept the University of Minnesota, Crookston 3-1 and 11-1 (seven innings) in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opening doubleheader for both teams today in Fayette, Iowa. The Peacocks improve to 6-9 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston falls to 5-9 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC. The two squads return to action tomorrow at 12 p.m.
Game One Recap
The first game saw masterful pitching performances by U of M, Crookston's
Ben Lazzari (Sr, RHP, Shakopee, Minn.) and Upper Iowa's Matt Treybig. Neither hurler allowed a run until the sixth inning when the Golden Eagles went up 1-0 before the Peacocks rallied for three runs to take game one 3-1.
Treybig threw all seven innings allowing one run on seven hits while striking out eight and walking one to get the win. Rudy Casillas went 3-3 for Upper Iowa. Matt Corbitt and Tyler Adams added two hits while Patrick Arntson added a hit and two runs batted in (RBI).
Lazzari threw 5.1 innings allowing three runs on one hit while striking out two and walking one to get the loss.
P.J. Zwach (Sr, 3B, St. Paul, Minn.) added a hit and an RBI.
Game Two Recap
The Peacocks led from start to finish scoring two in the first, two in the second, one in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth to win 11-1. The game was called due to the ten-run rule after the seventh inning.
Brett Westra threw seven innings allowing one run on six hits while striking out three to get the win. Casillas was 2-4 with two RBI. Ryan Kreiner was 2-3 with one RBI. Andrew Kraus added two hits.
Matt Korte (So, RHP, St. Cloud, Minn.) threw 4.1 innings allowing eight runs (seven earned) on six hits while striking out three and walking three to take the loss.
Charlie Pelzer (So, SS, Roseville, Minn.) and
Jordan Prill (Jr, DH, Melrose, Minn.) each had two hits for the Golden Eagles who committed four errors.
