Box Score 2 (Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Baseball team used some solid pitching in game one and some late-inning heroics in game two to sweep Valley City State University (VCSU) by scores of 5-0 and 5-4 today at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. It was the season opener for both teams.
Game 1 Recap
Matt Korte (So, RHP, St. Cloud, Minn.) held the Vikings scoreless over seven innings allowing only four hits to get his first collegiate win in a complete game shut-out as the Golden Eagles won 5-0. He struck out seven and walked three.
Charlie Pelzer (So, SS, Roseville, Minn.),
P.J. Zwach (Sr, SB, St. Paul, Minn.) and
Ben Lazzari (Sr, OF, Shakopee, Minn.) all had singles and runs batted in (RBI) for U of M, Crookston. Brenden Shearer had two hits for VCSU.
Game 2 Recap
Jordan Prill (Jr, DH, Melrose, Minn.) led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double and
Mitch Allore (Sr, 1B, North Mankato, Minn.) scored pinch runner
Jordan Osmundson (Fr, Pr, East Grand Forks, Minn.) with a walk-off single as U of M, Crookston took the night-cap 5-4. The Golden Eagles had opened up a 4-0 lead but VCSU scored two in the fifth and two in the sixth to knot the score at 4-4. Allore was 3-4 with the game winning RBI.
Josh Brehmer (So, 2B, Roseville, Minn.) was 2-4 with two RBI. Zwach added a triple and an RBI.
Nick Kelzer (So, RHP, Delano, Minn.) threw five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out four and walking one.
Bobby Arens (Jr, RHP, Kimball, Minn.) threw the final two-thirds of an inning to record the victory. Preston Jensen was 2-4 with two RBI for the Vikings. Colin Waldner threw the sixth and the seventh inning and took the loss in relief of Derek Zitzow who threw the first five innings.
U of M, Crookston returns to non-conference action on Sunday, February 26 when they travel to the H.H.H. Metrodome again to face Jamestown College in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
