Golden Eagles Drop NSIC Contest at St. Cloud State 64-54

Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston women's basketball team got strong scoring outings from Alexa Thielman (Fr., G, Buffalo, Minn.) and Ebony Livingston (So., G, Minneapolis, Minn.) as each had 12 points, but the Golden Eagles fell short of ending the so far unblemished season of St. Cloud State University 64-54 Saturday evening at Halenbeck Hall. UMC falls to 3-4 (0-3 NSIC). St. Cloud State improves their mark to 7-0 (3-0 NSIC). Livingston's outing was the best of the season for the sophomore who is just three games into her return from an injury that kept her out of UMC's first four games.

UMC finished the game shooting 24-of-65 for 36.9 percent from the field and 4-of-16 for 25.0 percent from beyond the arc. Thielman was 6-of-10 from the field for 12 points while Livingston was 5-of-13 for 12 points. The Golden Eagles' leading scorer, Brittani Wiese (Sr., G, Albertville, Minn.) added seven points while Katrina Moenkedick (Fr., F, Perham, Minn.) chipped in six. UMC finished with 18 turnovers for the game, as did St. Cloud State. The Golden Eagles were narrowly out-rebounded by the Huskies 42-38. Laurie Tyson (Sr., C, Rosemount, Minn.) led UMC on the boards with 10. Tyson needs just 25 rebounds to surpass Kari Score's school-record 572 career rebounds.

St. Cloud State finished the contest shooting 22-of-56 for 39.3 percent. The Huskies were also strong from behind the three-point line as they were 8-of-21 for 38.1 percent for the evening. St. Cloud State was paced by Sam Price's 18 points and four three-pointers while Rachael Moen added 11 points including 3 three-pointers and Jessica Benson chipped in 10 points. Benson finished off a double-double, leading the Huskies with 10 rebounds on the evening.

The Golden Eagles went down early in the first half after St. Cloud State went on a 13-0 run to open the game after Tyson had scored the first basket of the game making it 13-2 with 14:20 left in the first half. From that point on in the opening period UMC would out-score the Huskies 26-20 to stay in the game. The Golden Eagles would get to as close as two points within the lead in the first half aided by a 9-2 run from the 5:15 mark until 2:32 remaining in the period using five points from Livingston, two points from Ashley Martell (So., G, Somerset, Wis.) and two from Jaya Perkins (R-Fr., G, Lakeville, Minn.)

St. Cloud State would again gain control of the game getting their lead back out to nine points (33-24) following a Lexy Petermann jumper with 45 seconds remaining. However, the Golden Eagles would make a late run as they finished the half with a Livingston steal and then a converted jumper and a Moenkedick steal and lay-up to cut the lead down to five (33-28) at the half.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston was led in the first half by Livingston's 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Moenkedick, Perkins and Thielman each added four points for the Golden Eagles. UMC shot 12-of-33 for 36.4 percent in the first half and were 2-of-6 for 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.

St. Cloud State was paced in the opening half by Price's six points. Nicole Anderson and Amanda Wagner each added five points apiece. The Huskies shot 11-of-25 for 44.0 percent from the field and were 4-of-8 from beyond the arc for 50.0 percent.

Both teams brought down 19 rebounds in the first half. The Golden Eagles were led by Tyson with five rebounds. Petermann paced the Huskies with five boards.

UMC came out of the locker room and went on an 8-3 run building off their late momentum to end the first half as Thielman tallied four points, Tyson two and Wiese two as the Golden Eagles knotted the game at 36-36 with 14:33 left in the second frame. The two teams would then exchange baskets before the Huskies went on a 5-0 run of their own using a Price three and a Karissa LeCaptain two to make it 43-38 with 13:21 left.

The Golden Eagles would get back to within one point using back-to-back Thielman jumpers making it 43-42 with 11:48 remaining but the Huskies would again find a way to keep UMC at bay as they got back out to a nine-point advantage (58-49) with 6:29 left in the game.

UMC again crawled back into the fray using a Martell three-pointer and a Livingston jumper to cut the St. Cloud State lead to four points (58-54) with 4:18 remaining in Saturday's contest. The Huskies' Benson would hit a two-point jumper to get the Huskies lead to 60-54 with 3:07 left. The Golden Eagles had their opportunities down the stretch to cut into the St. Cloud State lead but ultimately fell short as the Huskies iced their victory 64-54.

Wiese is still inching toward becoming the seventh UMC women's basketball player to join the 1,000 point club. The senior needs just 14 points to reach the accomplishment as the Golden Eagles return home next weekend to play their first games at Lysaker Gymnasium this season. UMC will take on Minot State University at 6 p.m. Fri., Dec. 14 and University of Mary at 4 p.m., Sat., Dec. 15.
