Turnovers Doom Golden Eagles as UMC Falls to UMD 75-53

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston women's basketball team struggled with turnovers Friday night as they fell 75-53 to University of Minnesota Duluth in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) tilt. The Golden Eagles fall to 3-3 (0-2 NSIC) while the Bulldogs, who were picked to finish first in the NSIC North Division coming into the season, improve to 4-2 (1-1 NSIC).

The Golden Eagles finished the game with 22 turnovers compared to 14 for the Bulldogs. In addition, UMD held the University of Minnesota, Crookston starters to only 20 points including Brittani Wiese (Sr., G, Albertville, Minn.), the Golden Eagles' leading scorer who was held to only two points. Wiese came in averaging 16.6 points per game. UMC was led in scoring by freshman forward Erika McRoberts (Byron, Minn.), who tallied 10 points off the bench after shooting 4-of-7 from the field. Fellow freshman Katrina Moenkedick (F, Perham, Minn.) added eight points. The Golden Eagles finished the game shooting 19-of-45 for 42.2 percent and were held to only 3-of-11 shooting for 27.3 percent from beyond the arc. They also continued their struggles from the charity stripe as UMC was 12-of-20 for 60 percent from the free-throw line for the evening.

The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded on the game 38 to 28 including giving up 19 offensive rebounds for the Bulldogs. Laurie Tyson (Sr., C, Rosemount, Minn.), who is chasing Kari Score's UMC career rebounding record down, led UMC with eight rebounds. Tyson needs only 35 boards to surpass Score's record of 572 career rebounds.

Minnesota Duluth had three players score in double figures for the game paced by forward Hannah Rutten's 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field. Rutten added seven rebounds on the game. Rutten was aided by Courtney Doucette's 15 points and Kaiya Sygulla's 11 points. The Bulldogs picked up the win without sisters Katrina and Jessica Newman, normal starters for UMD, for most of the game. Jessica did not dress for UMD while Katrina started but played only five minutes. The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 29-of-65 for 44.6 percent from the field and 4-of-9 for 44.4 percent from beyond the arc.

The Golden Eagles will look to rebound after the loss as they face St. Cloud State University tomorrow at 4 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minn. Wiese will look to get back on track for the Golden Eagles as she needs only 21 points to be the seventh player in UMC history to score 1,000 points.
