Four Players Score in Double-Figures as Golden Eagles Open Season with 80-66 Win Over Presentation College

CROOKSTON, Minn.  – The University of Minnesota, Crookston defeated Presentation College 80-66 to open the 2012-13 season Friday night at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston. The Golden Eagles start off the year with a 1-0 record. The game was an exhibition for NCAA Division III affiliate Presentation College. UMC was led by four players scoring double figures paced by junior college transfer Brandon Burns (Jr., F, Baton Rouge, La.), who put in 18 points in his first official contest for the Golden Eagles.

UMC out-shot Presentation College on the night 53.6 percent to 38.2 percent. The Golden Eagles were 4-of-11 from behind the three-point line for 36.4 percent and 16-of-20 for 80 percent from the charity stripe. The Saints were 6-of-18 for 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 8-of-16 for 50 percent from the free-throw line. Presentation College out-rebounded the Golden Eagles by one, 38 to 37. The Saints had 18 offensive rebounds on the game.

The Golden Eagles and Saints went into half-time knotted at 34 to 34 but UMC used a strong second half, as they shot 59.3 percent from the field and 16-of-20 from the free-throw line, to overtake their counterparts from Aberdeen, S.D.

Burns was 8-of-13 from the field and added three boards. In addition to Burns' performance, three other Golden Eagles tallied double-figures on the night. James Sparkman (Jr., F, Ypsilanti, Mich.) added 16 points. Almir Krdzalic (Sr., G, Sioux Falls, S.D.) was 6-of-8 for the night and had 16 points. Senior guard Justin Rake (G, Petal, Miss.) rounded out UMC's double-figure scorers with 13 points, as he was 4-of-6 from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. All four double-figure scorers started for UMC on the night. Dominique Wright (So., G/F, Colorado Springs, Colo.) had six points to lead all scorers off the bench.

The Golden Eagle rebounding attack was led by Sparkman, Abdou Niang (Sr., F, Dakar, Senegal) and Ashton Harrell (Jr., G, Houston, Texas), each had seven boards on the night.

The Saints were led on the night by 18 points from 6-4 forward Darrell Farr. Farr was 8-of-20 for the night. Guard Anthony Hendricks added 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting and Chaz Haymond had 10 points. Hendricks led Presentation College on the boards with eight. Farr added six boards.

The Golden Eagles' Broderick Schmidt (Sr., F, Marion, S.D.), normally a starter, did make an appearance late in the game but will have surgery Monday on his knee and will miss at least three weeks.

UMC will return to action against Finlandia University on the road in Hancock, Mich. Nov. 15 at 8 p.m.
