ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston fell 3-0 at the hands of five-time defending NCAA Division II National Champion Concordia University, St. Paul Friday at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul. The Golden Eagles fall to 9-11 (5-8 NSIC). Concordia-St. Paul improves to 17-3 (11-2 NSIC) and has now won seven straight since losing to No. 6 University of Minnesota Duluth 3-1.
Concordia-St. Paul hit .340 for the match led by 13 kills from both Cassie Haag, a 2010 AVCA First Team All-American, and Ellie Duffy. Haag hit an incredible .591 for the match with no errors. The Golden Bear attack was guided by Kayla Konetchy, a 2011 AVCA First Team All-American, who had 41 assists.
Defensively, Concordia-St. Paul was paced by 15 digs from Taylor Dorden.
The Golden Eagles hit .043 for the match with 20 kills and 16 errors. Amanda Swann (Sr., OH, Rochester Hills, Mich.) led the way with six kills. Brittany Looker (So., OH, Rochester, Minn.) and Stephanie Pearson (Fr., OH, Frankfort, Ill.), who was filling for an injured Alexandra Skeeter (Jr., OH, Milwaukee, Wis.), both had three kills. Paige Mitchell (R-Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) tallied nine assists for the match.
Defensively, libero Chelsea Wiesner (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) had 16 digs while Pearson and Mitchell each tallied eight. Swann and Katie Miedtke (Jr., MH, Maple Grove, Minn.) each had three block assists.
The Golden Bears took the first set 25-16 after racing out to a 10-3 lead right from the onset.
UMC and Concordia-St. Paul went toe to toe for the first 14 points but the Golden Bears were then able to take control of the set taking 18 of the next 27 points from the Golden Eagles guided by six kills from Cassie Haag to win 25-16 in the second set.
The Golden Eagles came out of the break and got out to an early 4-1 lead over the Golden Bears aided by three attack errors from Concordia-St. Paul. However, the Golden Bears rallied after the knotting ut the score 6-6 and would go on to take 19 of the next 24 points in order to pick up a 25-11 win over UMC. The scoring rally for Concordia-St. Paul which included 15-straight points was paced by three kills from Ellie Duffy and Heather Schiller, the younger sister of UMC player Hannah Schiller (So., DS, Coon Rapids, Minn.).
The Golden Eagles will take on another ranked foe Saturday when they head to No. 13 Minnesota State University, Mankato for a 4 p.m. meeting with the Mavericks. UMC upset Minnesota State, who was also ranked No. 13 last season, 3-0 in Crookston. They also played a close match with Minnesota State in Mankato with the Mavericks winning in five, 3-2.
