(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team returns to Lysaker Gymnasium this Friday and Saturday to host Winona State University and Upper Iowa University. The Warriors of Winona State are tied with UMC in the NSIC at 4-5 and in the seventh spot with the top eight teams making conference tournament play. Upper Iowa is currently in last place in the NSIC at 1-8. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. against Winona on Friday and 4 p.m. against Upper Iowa on Saturday.
Minnesota, Crookston- (7-6, 4-5 NSIC) Senior
Megan Eul (F, 5-10, Sr., Rosemount, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles to a 1-1 NSIC record this weekend. Eul averaged 29 minutes/game and scored 26 points for a 13 points/game average. She shot 56% from the field, 50% from long range and 83% from the free-throw line. She dished four assists, grabbed three steals, and led the team with 11 rebounds.
Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, Jr., Albertville, Minn.) scored a game-high 19 points on Saturday against Northern State and averaged 12.5 points/game on the weekend. She grabbed three steals and dished a team-high nine assists.
Winona State- (9-6, 4-5 NSIC) Michelle McDonald (C, 6-0, Sr., Johnsburg, Ill. / Johnsburg HS) averaged 17 points and 6 rebounds per contest as the Warriors earned a pair of victories over Concordia-St. Paul and St. Cloud State. McDonald came off the bench to score 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting Saturday against Concordia-St. Paul and added 15 points and eight boards the next day against St. Cloud State. Four of her ten rebounds on the weekend came on the offensive end. She was 13-of-20 (65%) from the floor and 8-of-9 (89%) from the free throw line while handing out two assists and collecting six steals.
Upper Iowa- (1-12, 1-8 NSIC) Jeri Jacobson (G, 5-9, Sr., Riverton, Wyo., Central Wyoming College) averaged 18 points and 8.5 rebounds as the Peacocks split this weekend's games against St. Cloud State and Concordia. Jacobson hit 19 of 22 opportunities at the charity stripe in the two games and added three triples from behind the arc. Following a hard-fought, three-point loss to St. Cloud State on Saturday, the Peacock women's basketball team snapped a 29-game losing streak that spanned all the way back to last Dec. 18 on Sunday. The 62-44 win over the Golden Bears of Concordia gave UIU their first win of the year and ended the skid that spanned two seasons. Upper Iowa controlled the first eight minutes of the game jumping out to a 15-4 lead on their guests en route to a 10-point lead at half. Coming out of the locker room, Upper Iowa slowly began to pull away and built their lead to as many as 20 points, 62-42, before settling for the 62-44 win. After Jacobson, the Peacocks were led by Whitney Kieffer (13.5 points, 6 reb), Lyndsay Westgaard (10 points, 4.5 reb) and Jen Herrick (7.5 points, 3.5 assists).
