Mavericks Use Turnovers to Defeat Golden Eagles 78-76

Box Score (Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team returned to Lysaker Gymnasium this evening to host the Mavericks of Minnesota State, Mankato. The Golden Eagles rebounded to shoot 53.6% (15-28) in the first half after the team struggled in the first 20 minutes of play last night against Southwest Minnesota State. At the break, UMC had out-rebounded the Mavericks 21-13 and led 41-38. It was turnovers throughout the game however that doomed the Golden Eagles. In the contest, UMC committed 22 turnover which led to 27 Maverick points as Minnesota State went on to take the 78-76 victory. Despite the turnovers, the game was tightly contested seeing 15 tie scores and 13 lead changes.

The Golden Eagles were led by Megan Eul (F, 5-10, Sr., Rosemount, Minn.) who tied a season-high and led all players with 21 points. She was an outstanding 8-9 from the field and 5-7 from the free-throw line while missing a double-double by one rebound finishing the contest with nine. Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, Jr., Albertville, Minn.) followed Eul with 15 points and tied a game-high with three assists while Ashley Martell (G, 5-8, Fr., Somerset, Wis.) finished with 12 points. Defensively, Laurie Tyson (C, 6-1, Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) finished with a game-high 12 rebounds while Cienna Walker (G, 5-10, Fr., Ajax, Ontario) led all players with two blocked shots.

Minnesota State was led by Laura Weber who finished with 20 points on 10-19 shooting. Jennie Noreen finished the game with 17 points and added eight rebounds and three assists. Aubrey Davis finished with 15 points and a game-high four steals.

Minnesota, Crookston falls to 6-5 on the season and 3-4 in conference play.  Minnesota State advances to 9-3 on the season and 5-3 in the NSIC.  The Golden Eagles return to the court on Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 8 when the team travels to Northern State and Mary. Game times are set for 4 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
