Winona State Capitalizes on Minnesota, Crookston Turnovers in 71-59 Victory

Box Score (Crookston, Minn.) The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team returned to Lysaker Gymnasium this evening to take on Winona State University. The Golden Eagles struggled from the field and with a high tempo Winona State offensive attack in the first half and went into the break down 39-22. The second half appeared promising when the Golden Eagles took control at first, but the momentum continued to swing in favor of the Warriors. Despite outscoring the Warriors in the final 20 minutes of play 37-32, WSU held on to the 71-59 NSIC victory. In the game, Winona State turned 16 Golden Eagle turnovers in 24 points, the difference in the contest.
 
The Golden Eagles were led this evening by Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, Jr., Albertville, Minn.) who tallied 20 points. She was 6-12 from the field with all six shots coming from beyond the arc for a new career record and finished 2-2 from the free-throw line. She finished second on the team with four rebounds and dished a game-high five assists. Ashley Martell (G, 5-8, Fr., Somerset, Wis.) followed Wiese with 11 points and was 3-3 from long range. Laurie Tyson (C, 6-1, Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) tied a game-high with six rebounds. The Golden Eagles as a team hit 13 total three-pointers in the game.
 
Winona State was led by Michelle McDonald who tallied 20 points. She was 9-13 from the field and 2-4 from the line. Beth Alberson finished with 18 points while Abby Busch added 12 points and tied McDonald with six rebounds.
 
Minnesota, Crookston falls to 7-7 on the season and 4-6 in conference play. Winona advances to 10-6 overall and 5-5 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court tomorrow to host Upper Iowa at 4 p.m.
