Warriors Down Golden Eagle Men 74-57

Box Score (Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Men's Basketball team matched up tonight against the Winona State University (WSU) Warriors at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn. The Golden Eagles came into the game off a tough road win against the University of Mary and looked forward to facing the 10th ranked team in the nation. Although playing a hard fought game, the Golden Eagles fell behind ten points at the half and could never recover as the Warriors took the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) contest by a 74-57 score.

The game opened up with an offensive showdown with each team coming out with a couple quick field goals to open the first half. WSU's big men created a problem for the Golden Eagles down low and allowed the Warriors to go on a 16-6 run to give WSU a 12 point lead with 11 minutes left in the first half. Ten fouls and six turnovers haunted U of M, Crookston in the first half but energy and hard-nosed play by Akeem Cubie (6-6, Sr, F, Minneapolis, Minn.) kept the Golden Eagles within ten points ending the first half with a score of 43-33 Warriors.

Keith Newberry (6-7, So, C, Rochester Hills, Mich.) started off the second half with a statement by blocking a shot in the face of Winona State's offensive leader Clayton Vette. However, WSU's relentless offense came back, kept the pace up and regained the momentum in the second half by continually forcing the ball up the court and minimizing turnovers. The Warriors continued to slowly add to their lead and ended the game with a 74-57 win.

Cubie led U of M, Crookston (5-9 overall and 1-9 NSIC) with a game high 27 points (12-22). Jacolby Anderson (6-1, Sr, G, Lancaster, Tex.) added ten points (5-13).

Clayton Vette led WSU (14-2 and 9-1 NSIC) with 26 points (10-15). Grant Johnson added 18 points (7-10) and six rebounds

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, January 14 with an NSIC game against Upper Iowa University in Crookston, Minn. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.
