(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Volleyball team returns to Lysaker Gymnasium this Friday and Saturday to host #1 Concordia- St. Paul and St. Cloud State University. Match times are set for 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
Minnesota, Crookston (4-7, 0-3 NSIC)- The Golden Eagle Volleyball team played in three NSIC matches this past week. UMC's offense was led by
Brittany Looker (OH, 5-10, Fr., Rochester, Minn.) who tal¬lied 36 kills in 11 sets for a 3.27 kill/set average. Setter
Kelsey Matykowski (S, 5-7, Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) recorded 94 assists and earned an 8.55 assist/set average.
Chelsea Wiesner (DS, 5-8, So., Rochester, Minn.) led all players with 53 defensive digs. As a team, the Golden Eagles combined for 134 kills, 126 assists, 202 defensive digs and 19 total blocks.
Concordia- St. Paul (10-0, 2-0 NSIC)- Katie Habeck (MB, 6'0, Fr., Farmington, Minn. / Farmington HS) had a career high 13 kills against Northern State this weekend as she helped lead CU to wins to start the NSIC season. She hit .500 on the weekend with 24 total kills and seven blocks, an average of 1.17 blocks per set. Against NSU she had those 13 kills while hitting .455 along with two blocks and two assists. Against U-Mary she had 11 kills with just one error as she hit .556 and picked up five blocks. Amanda Konetchy (S, 5-7, So., Victoria, Minn. / Chaska HS) continued to prove why she is one of the best setters in the nation averaging 12.83 assists per set on her way to 77 set assists on the weekend. Against NSU Konetchy had forty assists, five digs and three kills as CU hit .354 in the match. In the match with U-Mary, Konetchy had 37 assists, six digs and an ace as she led CU to a .392 hitting percentage. Megan Carlson (OH, 5-9, Sr., Andover, Minn. / Andover HS / Marshall University) led Concordia with 4.50 digs per set this weekend as well as adding 17 kills, five aces and was a perfect 24-24 in serve receive. Against NSU she had a team high 15 digs to go along with eight kills, three aces, a block and 15-15 on serve receive. In the match with U-Mary she had a team high 12 digs in addition to nine kills, two aces and was 9-9 in serve receive. Concordia continued their streak of 30 straight sets won to start the year and have now won 32 straight sets dating back to the 2010 season. The Golden Bears have now won 74 straight regular season NSIC matches, 54 straight home matches and 32 straight matches overall.
St. Cloud State (5-5, 1-1 NSIC)- St. Cloud State plays host to #8 Southwest Minnesota State University on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 7:00 pm in Halenbeck Hall. Last season the nationally ranked Mus¬tangs swept the Huskies in both league matches. The last time St. Cloud State tabbed a match victory over SMSU was on Nov. 9, 2004, when the Huskies beat the Mustangs in four sets (22-30, 30-25, 30-20, 30-24). The St. Cloud State volleyball squad is 5-5 overall in 2011 and 1-1 in the ever-grueling Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Huskies split their season home opening weekend on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16-17, as St. Cloud State gained a huge come-from-behind victory over the Uni¬versity of Mary in five sets (24-26, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16, 20-18). SCSU then lost the following afternoon to Northern State in four sets (25-19, 20-25, 15-25, 20-25). Rookie setter Erin Ohlemann (Golden Valley, Minn.) proved to be a match changer as the St. Cloud State University volleyball squad came from behind to defeat the University of Mary Marauders in five sets on Friday, Sept. 16, in HalenbeckHall. In her collegiate debut, Ohlemann sparked the Huskies with eight kills (.500), eight digs, two block assists and dished out 27 assists. For her efforts against the Marauders, Ohlemann earned her first career start the following afternoon against Northern State (Sept. 17).
